Temple tops Dayton in A-10 softball opener

Ali Robinson (Gloucester Catholic) hit a first-inning home run, and Stephanie Pasquale ripped a three-run single in the second for third-seeded Temple on Wednesday in a 7-2 win over No. 6 Dayton (22-23) in the opening round of the Atlantic Ten softball tournament in Amherst, Mass. The Owls (31-24) face No. 2 Fordham on Thursday.

Robinson's homer was her 15th and set a Temple single-season record. She was 2 for 3; Pasquale went 3 for 3 with two RBIs.

Golf. Millersville's Robert Coyne (Downingtown West) finished second in the Atlantic/East Super Regional men's tournament but qualified for the NCAA Division II championship. Zack Kempa of Indiana (Pa.) edged Coyne by a stroke in Wheeling, W.Va.

 Baseball. West Chester 5, California (Pa.) 0 - Joe Gunkel tossed a complete-game, four-hit shutout to lead the Golden Rams (23-23-1), the fourth seed in the Eastern Division, past the Vulcans (33-17), the top seed in the West, in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference tournament opener in Johnstown. On Thursday, West Chester will face East No. 2 seed Kutztown, a 6-1 winner over Mercyhurst.

Rutgers-Camden 2, Stevens Institute of Technology 0 - Adam Satanoff (Pitman) tossed a five-hit shutout as the fifth-seeded Scarlet Raptors (23-18) beat No. 4 Stevens (23-18) in the Eastern College Athletic Conference Division III Metro tournament in Camden. They will face No. 1 St. John Fisher on Saturday.

Adrian Gonzalez (Pennsauken) hit a triple and scored on a double by Connor Hall (Delran) in the ninth. John Santilli (St. Joseph-Hammonton) followed with an RBI single for his 100th career hit.
