Villanova hoops to play three at Wells Fargo Center

Villanova announced Wednesday that the men's basketball team will play three of its 2012-13 home games at the Wells Fargo Center, all against Big East opposition.

The Wildcats will play Louisville on Jan. 22 and Syracuse on Jan. 26 in South Philadelphia. They will return to the Wells Fargo Center on March 6, when they close their regular season against Georgetown.

With the Wells Fargo Center hosting second- and third-round games in the 2013 NCAA tournament, Villanova is limited to three regular-season games there if it wishes to remain eligible to be placed in Philadelphia by the committee in charge of selecting teams and placing them at the various locations.

The Wildcats last played three games at the Wells Fargo Center in 2008-09, when they were seeded third in the East Region and played their first two rounds in South Philadelphia.

Men's soccer. Lycoming (3-2-1) scored twice in two minutes in the second half to defeat host Juniata (5-3), 2-0. The Warriors' Will Reiber scored on a penalty kick in the 79th minute, and Kyle Smith tallied his first career goal in the 81st minute.

Connor Keenan (Downingtown East) earned the shutout in net, making two saves.

Philadelphia University scored three unanswered goals to beat Wilmington, 3-1, in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game. Jakob Passernig broke a 1-1 tie in the 69th minute, scoring on a through ball from Cesar Romero for his third goal of the year. Patrick Groh put the game away with an 88th-minute goal.

Ishmaiah Calwrie scored for Philadelphia U. in the 22d minute, tying the game at 1.

Women's soccer. Host Misericordia (6-0-1) dealt Lycoming (1-5-1) an 11-0 drubbing. Seven players scored for the Cougars.

Visiting Philadelphia University dropped Wilmington, 3-0, in CACC action. Melissa Copeland had a hand in all three of the Rams' goals. Philadelphia U. (5-2, 5-0) has won its last five games, all shutouts.

Field hockey. Penn's Elizabeth Hitti scored the second of her two goals with 5 minutes, 26 seconds left, lifting the Quakers (4-3) to a 4-3 win over La Salle (2-6). Carly Sokach had 11 saves for Penn.

Maddie Daub (Cherokee) tied the score at 3 in the 47th minute off an assist from Collen Kempf (Central Bucks South), who also had a goal in the loss.

Cabrini defeated Notre Dame of Maryland, 7-0. Kerry Anne Farrell (Archbishop Prendergast) had a goal and two assists for the first points of her college career.

Hayward Sawers scored two goals just over two minutes apart early in the first half as Gettysburg (6-1, 2-0 Centennial Conference) defeated Dickinson (3-4, 0-2), 3-1.

Bloomsburg's Brooke Simonovich scored off a scrum in front of the cage in overtime to boost the Huskies past host Millersville, 1-0, in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference game.

The Marauders (5-3, 1-1) have not defeated Bloomsburg (7-1, 2-0) in 22 years.

Hirings and moves. Former Israeli epee champion Anastasia Ferdman will join the staff of Temple's women's fencing team as an assistant coach, the school announced. "We are extremely pleased to have Anastasia join our coaching staff this year," head coach Nikki Franke said in a statement. Ferdman has spent the last two years as the head coach at Ridge High School in Basking Ridge, N.J.

St. Joseph's hired former Hawk standouts Brooke Darreff and Erin Gallagher as softball coaches. Darreff will be an assistant coach, and Gallagher returns as an undergraduate assistant.

Susan Moran has been promoted to associate head coach of St. Joseph's women's basketball team. Moran, the all-time leading scorer in St. Joseph's history, was an assistant with the Hawks the last nine seasons.
