College Basketball: Villanova women lose Sweeney but beat St. Joe's

Despite playing without leading scorer Laura Sweeney (Cherokee) for most of the game, the Villanova women's basketball team managed to earn a 55-51 win at St. Joseph's on Saturday afternoon.

The sixth straight victory improves the Wildcats to 7-1 overall and 2-0 in Big Five play, while the Hawks fall to 5-3 overall and 0-1 in City Series action.

Sweeney suffered an eye injury diving for a ball at the 17-minute, 14-second mark of the first half and did not return to the game.

Elsewhere: Erin Mann (Villa Maria) finished with a game-high 29 points as Holy Family beat Concordia, 77-49. . . . Erica Marvel (Oxford) scored 14 points and Colleen Hinde (Wissahickon) tallied 12, but Neumann fell to Rosemont, 87-68. . . . Natasha Matthews (Norristown) scored 16 points as Gwynedd-Mercy held on to beat Kingston, 66-65. . . . Alexandra Lennon (Shipley) scored 23 points to lead West Chester to a 72-57 PSAC East win over Mansfield.

Men

West Chester 84, Mansfield 65 - Harley Williamson (Lower Merion) scored14 points as the Rams won the PSAC East game.

Elsewhere: Dillon Fields (Shawnee) scored a career-high 23 points for Widener, which beat Stevenson, 87-64.
