Curtis improving and impressing

It's only training camp. In another month, the great catches and the awful drops at Lehigh University will have long been forgotten.

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - It's only training camp. In another month, the great catches and the awful drops at Lehigh University will have long been forgotten.

Still, it appears as if Kevin Curtis is going to fit quite nicely into the Eagles' offense.

Curtis, signed as a free agent after Donté Stallworth left for New England via the same route, made a sensational grab to start the Eagles' full contact scrimmage yesterday. With the team working on its red-zone offense, Curtis lined up on the left side of the field and went across the middle, making a diving catch in the end zone for a touchdown. He also slammed into the goalpost on the play.

Later in the practice, Curtis got behind cornerback Sheldon Brown and caught a 55-yard touchdown pass on a perfectly thrown ball by Donovan McNabb.

"Kevin's coming on," Eagles offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg said. "He's getting better every day and is certainly a talented young man. In fact, about two days ago, I though he really started getting comfortable with what we do in general. . . . He's got a lot of hard work ahead of him, but he's doing a pretty good job, especially in the last few days."

Day of rest

Running back

Brian Westbrook

and defensive end

Jevon Kearse

were not on the injury report yesterday, but they were not on the practice field, either. Coach

Andy Reid

told a team spokesman that the players were given the day off to "rest their legs."

Mornhinweg, however, described Westbrook's absence as "an injury situation."

"I don't think it's anything serious," Mornhinweg said. "I would expect him back pretty quick, I would think, unless something changes here."

Tackle Jon Runyan was also excused from both workouts after attending the Hall of Fame induction ceremonies in Canton, Ohio, on Saturday. Runyan went to see the induction of his former Houston Oilers/Tennessee Titans teammate, Bruce Matthews.

Extra points

The total attendance for the two workouts yesterday was 9,287. . . . With Westbrook out yesterday,

Correll Buckhalter

ran with the first team,

Tony Hunt

moved up to the second-team offense, and

Ryan Moats

ran with the third team. Moats, by the way, is designing his own line of football cleats and is looking to work with a shoe company to develop his ideas.
