Which leads me to this: How far away do you think the Eagles are from getting to the Super Bowl? What do they need to get there? And could it happen this season?

Re: Super Bowl or bust
They were a touchdown away from getting there last year, and, yes, there have been some changes, but they were considered upgrades by the team in the off-season. First of all, they need to be healthy, a problem since the first day of training camp. Second, they need their offensive weapons to get in sync. Finally, they need new middle linebacker Will Witherspoon to be an impact player. That's a lot to ask, but given what's happened in the NFC in recent years - Arizona going to the Super Bowl last year and the Giants winning it the year before - anything is possible.

Ashley, I'm sure you've seen The Big Lebowski. Bob, I know you haven't (By the way, get on it). Anyway, there's this scene when The Dude (Jeff Bridges) has his beloved Ford Torino stolen and then found. The Dude picks up his car from the impound lot and asks the cop if he's had any promising leads. The cop responds with something like, "Yeah, we got a team of detectives and the boys down at the crime lab looking into it," and walks off laughing hysterically. I thought of this scene when I saw Ashley's question about the Eagles reaching the Super Bowl.

I guess I fall somewhere in the middle. I'm not necessarily optimistic, but I've been around this team long enough to not discount it in October. Or November. Or December, for that matter. But I am worried about the Eagles' offensive line and the middle of their D, among other things.

The main reason to think they won't be making a trip to the Super Bowl right now is the New Orleans Saints. Drew Brees and company are the best team in football and will remain so unless they suffer some bad injuries.

How come no one is biting on my Big Lebowski setup? We could e-mail back and forth for hours with Lebowski quotes. Our newspaper readers might not get it, but the online kids will love it!
