Former Ohio State tailback Maurice Clarett asked a judge on Monday for permission to travel to a tryout with the Omaha Nighthawks of the United Football League. A review of the motion will take place Wednesday.
Clarett, who rushed for 1,237 yards in 2002 to lead the Buckeyes to the national championship, pleaded guilty in 2006 to aggravated robbery and carrying a concealed weapon and served 31/2 years in prison. He cannot leave the state of Ohio until he receives clearance from the court.
Among the players on the expansion Omaha franchise are former Eagles quarterback Jeff Garcia and former Packers running back Ahman Green.
TENNIS: Rafael Nadal will be the top-seeded man when the U.S. Open starts next week, while Roger Federer will come to Flushing Meadows seeded second.
The women's seedings have been delayed one day because of a rainout of Sunday's final at the Rogers Cup in Montreal. On Monday, world No. 2 Caroline Wozniacki defeated Vera Zvonareva, 6-3, 6-2, to win that tournament.
At No. 9, Andy Roddick is the highest seeded American man.

The Russian is now ineligible for "any ISU activity," the international federation said, including the Olympics and world championships.
WNBA: Diana Taurasi signed a multiyear extension with the Phoenix Mercury, ending speculation that she will take next season off and only play overseas, where she makes about five times as much money.
BASKETBALL: Oklahoma City Thunder center Nenad Krstic said Monday he fears he'll be suspended for the world championships because of his role in a bench-clearing brawl during Serbia's game against Greece.
Krstic hit Greek player Yannis Bouroussis in the head with a chair in the fight that broke out during a tournament last Thursday in Athens.
FIBA, the international basketball federation, said it will review the incident and announce possible sanctions by Wednesday.
The Toronto Raptors' Jose Manuel Calderon, a point guard for Spain, will miss the world championships after tearing a muscle in his leg in an exhibition against the United States on Sunday.
