Eagles Notebook: Unofficial roster moves for Eagles

The Eagles didn't announce any news yesterday, but thanks to Twitter, we know a few things unofficially. It would seem defensive tackle Jeff Owens will be promoted from the practice squad to replace the injured Brodrick Bunkley. Owens tweeted: "Just found out that I will be playing on Sunday!!!! #ThankYouJesus!!!!!!"

It would seem defensive tackle Jeff Owens will be promoted from the practice squad to replace the injured Brodrick Bunkley. Owens tweeted: "Just found out that I will be playing on Sunday!!!! #ThankYouJesus!!!!!!"

Owens, a seventh-round rookie from Georgia, later took down the tweet. An Eagles spokesman, asked to clarify, said no roster moves were made yesterday. Translated, that would seem to mean that Andy Reid wants to announce the move when he addresses reporters today, or even that the Eagles don't plan to make the move official until later in the week. They followed a similar protocol last week, when everyone assumed (correctly) that Chad Hall was playing in San Francisco, but Hall didn't join the roster until Saturday.

There were whispers last night that Bunkley might avoid surgery and being placed on injured reserve, after all, but he certainly isn't likely to play this week, so Owens still seems likely to come up. (If Bunkley isn't IR'd, the Birds will have to cut someone for that to happen, of course. And, while we're looking at the roster, keep in mind Victor Abiamiri is eligible to come off PUP as soon as next week.)

Corner Asante Samuel tweeted that he has been medically cleared, after missing the San Francisco game with a concussion. This was less revelatory, since Reid said on his Monday night radio show that he expected to get Samuel back this week.

Also, the Eagles hosted wideout Kelly Washington, a special-teams ace who was with them in the preseason. This would seem to mean that if the Birds decide they need a fifth wideout long-term, they might go with Washington instead of Hall to try to boost their struggling kick coverage. Again, nothing was announced.

DJax on Kolb

DeSean Jackson was upbeat about playing with Kevin Kolb, during Jackson's weekly appearance last night on Comcast SportsNet's "Daily News Live," even though Kolb doesn't seem to be able to get the ball to Jackson as often or as far down the field as Michael Vick does.

Asked about the fact that his catches from Vick have accounted for nearly three times as many yards as his catches from Kolb (granted, in a really small statistical sample either way), Jackson didn't give a direct answer.

"Anything I can do to help the team, I'll do," Jackson said, contending he doesn't keep track of such things. He also noted that "I'm not the quarterback."

Asked specifically about Kolb's performance in leading the Eagles to a 27-24 victory at San Francisco Sunday night, Jackson said: "We have confidence in him . . . I think he came in and did a good job, especially after all the hype with Vick," who replaced Kolb as the starter after Kolb missed the second game of the season with a concussion.

Jackson praised Kolb for doing "smart things . . . key things on third down."

Jackson suffered what he afterward referred to as a knee "twist" late in Sunday's game. Last night, Jackson called the injury "nothing too serious," and said "I'll be all right" for this week's game against the visiting Falcons.

Jackson was asked about the fact that he hasn't been able to break a punt return yet, as the Birds' special-teams units struggle.

"Punt return is a hit or miss thing," he said. "I always tell the guys, 'All I need is a little, slight crease.' "
