Mularkey was the offensive coordinator of the Atlanta Falcons, who managed managed only two points in a wild-card loss to the New York Giants on Sunday. He previously was the head coach in Buffalo, where he went 14-18 before being fired after the 2005 season.

Raiders owner Mark Davis, son of the late Al Davis, made the decision to bring in general manager Reggie McKenzie last week and gave him the authority over the coaching staff. McKenzie, who had been director of football operations in Green Bay, is a former Raiders linebacker.

McKenzie is said to be interested in a trio of Green Bay assistants: offensive line coach Winston Moss, secondary coach Darren Perry, and offensive coordinator Joe Philbin, who is on leave dealing with the death of his son, Michael.

Philbin's son found dead

Authorities confirmed that a body recovered Monday afternoon in Wisconsin's Fox River was that of Michael Philbin, the 21-year-old son of the Packers offensive coordinator.

Philbin, who lived in Ripon, Wis., had been reported missing Sunday night. Police said an investigation was ongoing, but said that foul play is not suspected,

Birds official interviewed

Ryan Grigson of the Eagles interviewed Monday for the vacant general manager's position in St. Louis. Grigson, the Birds' director of player personel since Feb. 3, 2010, also will interview with the Indianapolis Colts, ESPN reported.

Timely hire

The New England Patriots officially hired assistant coach Josh McDaniels, who was let go by the St. Louis Rams at the end of the regular season.

McDaniels was the Patriots' offensive coordinator before leaving to become the Broncos head coach in 2009.

The Patriots host those same Broncos - who fired McDaniels after 2010 - in an AFC semifinal on Sunday night.

Noteworthy

Six former Eagles are among 106 retired football players who have filed a mass personal injury lawsuit against the NFL.

The suit, filed Monday in Philadelphia, contends the NFL downplayed the risks of head injuries and failed to take steps to prevent traumatic brain impacts. It alleges the NFL's response to brain injuries was "one of deception and denial" and that until recently the organization "actively tried to conceal the extent of the problem."

The retired Eagles named as plaintiffs include: Harvey Armstrong, Bill Cody, Pete Lazetich, Dennis McKnight, Dave Recher, and Jerry Robinson.

Veteran wide receiver Derrick Mason, 37, said he will retire after 15 NFL seasons. The two-time Pro Bowl selection caught 943 career passes for 12,061 yards and 66 touchdowns.
