Eagles defensive tackle Mike Patterson was hospitalized Thursday with viral pneumonia and remained in the hospital on Friday, the team said. Trainer Rick Burkholder said Patterson was "doing fine" and was stable while the team awaited test results.
Patterson has been ruled out for Sunday's game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and will not travel with the team.
The illness is not related to the arteriovenous malformation in Patterson's brain that affected him last season and required surgery, the team said.
"He just got sick and he ended up with pneumonia," Burkholder said. "We put him in the hospital where he could get the best care and we can keep an eye on him, and we'll see how he does over the next couple of days."
Burkholder said other players were not infected, but that the team would continue monitoring them because of the close quarters the players share.
Coleman out
Eagles safety Kurt Coleman will miss Sunday's game with a bruised sternum. Colt Anderson will start in place of Coleman, who was hurt in Sunday's loss to the Cowboys.
Anderson is making his first start since 2010; he is usually a special-teams ace. He recovered from a torn anterior cruciate ligament in the offseason.
"Through special teams you could see him improve in his speed, in his trust [in his knee], and all those things when you're coming off an injury," coach Andy Reid said. "I think he's back now and feels good."
Extra points
Reserve offensive lineman Nate Menkin sustained a throat injury on the last play of Friday's practice and has been declared out. Menkin has not been active yet this season, so he was unlikely to play. He is expected to be placed on injured reserve. . . . In addition to Patterson, Coleman, and Menkin, quarterback Michael Vick and running back LeSean McCoy have been declared out. Running back Chris Polk is questionable with a toe injury that has sidelined him for the last month.
