Putting a local spin on Chip's sideline signs
RECENTLY, THERE was some concern that NFL officials wouldn't let Eagles coach Chip Kelly dictate the pace of the game via his up-tempo offense.

RECENTLY, THERE was some concern that NFL officials wouldn't let Eagles coach Chip Kelly dictate the pace of the game via his up-tempo offense.
It ended up being a non-story.
He said he understands the NFL rules and will have no trouble following them. After all, Kelly ran a blistering-quick offense at Oregon and never had any trouble there.
That's not good news for opposing teams.
Former Oregon center Jordon Holmes tells a story about how the Ducks were playing Tennessee when, in the third quarter, a Volunteers' defensive end said to him, "If you guys run two more plays at this speed. I'm going to fall over dead."
Back then, Kelly was doing whatever he could to speed things up, including using sideline placards to call the plays.
There would be posters of just about anything and anyone, including ESPN's Scott Van Pelt and the gopher from "Caddyshack." All the players had to do was look to the sideline to see which play to run.
How cool would it be if Kelly did that with the Eagles?
Of course, fans here would want placards with a local connection.
Here are a few suggestions:
* Joe Frazier: Punch it into the end zone.
* Delilah's Den: Strip the ball.
* Mayor Nutter: Sweep to the left.
* Rick Santorum: Sweep to the far right.
* Daily News cartoonist Signe Wilkinson: Draw play.
* Archbishop Charles Chaput: Hail Mary (or the kneel down).
* Fire commissioner Lloyd Ayers: Hook and ladder.
* Joey Chestnut: Wing formation.
* Ed Rendell: Time to run.
* Cliff Lee: Pitch out.
* Butkus (Rocky's dog): Pooch punt.
* Jay Wright: Wildcat offense.
* Donovan McNabb: Pressure the quarterback to cough up the ball.
