Time of obsession

Being dead last in time of possession does not bode well for Birds.

Chip Kelly will tell you that time of possession doesn't mean a thing in the NFL. We're here to tell you that it means at least a little more than he says it does.

His Birds are dead last right now in average time of possession at 24:25. (Everybody else in the league but the Buffalo Bills, 24:48, are over 26 minutes.) A look at the teams that finish last in TOP over the last 14 seasons, sees an average total of just over four wins a year and only one club that even finished .500 (2006 Titans, 8-8).

Conversely, the team with the highest TOP in those seasons averaged 11.5 wins, all finished over .500 and all but one of them (2010 Chargers, 9-7) made the playoffs.
