Vick/McCoy return to practice

Michael Vick and LeSean McCoy will return to practice on Tuesday, but neither player is expected to do much and neither is likely to play Thursday night when the Eagles host the Bengals.

The Eagles have not yet ruled out Vick or McCoy, but sources close to both players said they won't dress on Thursday night.

Vick and McCoy are both in Phase 5 of their return from concussion, Eagles head athletic trainer Rick Burkholder said. They both reached baseline on the ImPACT test they took on Monday. They have to complete Phase 5, which involves strenuous exercise with contact, and be cleared by an independent neurologist before they can return.

Burkholder said that he could add contact to their workouts on Wednesday. They could also see the independent doctor a day from now, Burkholder said.

It's unclear what role Vick will have when he returns. Andy Reid named Nick Foles the starting quarterback for the rest of the season last week. He said that Vick would be Foles' backup, but he added that he was more concerned about getting the quarterback healthy.

Bryce Brown has filled in for McCoy over the last three games. He will start Thursday, but will likely fall to No. 2 on the depth chart when McCoy returns.

Vick and McCoy will not be made available to reporters, the Eagles said.

-- Brent Celek suffered a concussion on Sunday and has already been ruled out for the Bengals game. Burkholder said Celek briefly lost consciousness. Celek has passed his ImPACT test, but is still in Phase 1.

-- Burkholder said that Mike Patterson, who spent part of last week in the hospital to treat a viral pneumonia, was home and resting. The defensive tackle has already been ruled out for the Bengals game.

-- Jeremy Maclin (groin) will be limited at practice, but Reid said that he expected the receiver to play Thursday night. Maclin revealed that he injured his groin during the celebration following his game-winning touchdown in Tampa when cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha jumped on him.

-- Reid said that safety Kurt Coleman (chest bruise) would be limited at practice and that it was a stretch that he would be ready to play Thursday. Colt Anderson will start in Coleman's place for the second straight game.

-- Asomugha (neck stinger/quadriceps contusion) will practice today. "He should be fine" for Thursday's game Reid said.

-- Evan Mathis (ankle) will also be limited, but Reid made it sound as if the left guard would be healthy enough to play against the Bengals.

-- Foles was nominated for FedEx Air NFL Player of the Week for his performance against the Buccaneers. The rookie quarterback is up against the Patriots' Tom Brady and the Panthers' Cam Newton.
