Eagles wide receiver Mack Hollins placed on injured reserve

Hollins has not played since the first preseason game.

The Eagles placed wide receiver Mack Hollins on injured reserve Thursday after Hollins suffered what coach Doug Pederson labeled a "minor setback" in his recovery from a groin injury. Hollins had offseason sports hernia surgery, although Pederson said the injury was unrelated. Hollins has not played since the first preseason game.

The Eagles can designate two players to return from injured reserve after eight weeks. Otherwise, Hollins would be out for the season.

Anticipating Hollins' absence in Thursday's game, the Eagles signed veteran wide receiver Markus Wheaton. They are also missing wide receiver Alshon Jeffery, leaving the team undermanned at the position.

Hollins, a 2017 fourth-round pick, played all 16 games and three playoff games last year. He took 25 percent of the offensive snaps during the regular season and 23 percent of the offensive snaps during the postseason. Hollins finished last year with 16 catches for 226 yards and one touchdown.

He's also a key special teams player, and his absence will hurt that unit. Pederson said the Eagles must improve on special teams this season.
