Villanova defensive end Rakim Cox has signed a free-agent contract with the Minnesota Vikings.

A four-year starter at Villanova, the 6-foot-4, 260-pound Cox led the Wildcats last season in sacks (nine) and tackles for loss (111/2).

In 48 career games, he had 18 sacks, 331/2 tackles for loss, and 105 tackles overall. He will try to make a Vikings team that has another local defensive lineman, second-year tackle Sharrif Floyd, a product of George Washington High, who was a first-round draft choice last season.

Cox's ability to play special teams could be in his favor. As a senior, he blocked three kicks.

Owl joins Bears

Temple tackle Cody Booth signed as an undrafted free agent with the Chicago Bears.

Owls punter Paul Layton will attend the Green Bay Packers' rookie camp on a tryout basis next week.
