Eagles 3rd round pick Josh Huff review: Big plays, blocking, and drops

With their third round pick Friday night, the Eagles selected Chip Kelly's old WR Josh Huff out of Oregon. Huff is 5'11, 206 pounds, and physical. During his final season at Oregon, Huff caught 62 passes for 1140 yards, 7 TDs, and an eye-popping 18.4 yards per catch.

There's a site by the name of DraftBreakdown.com that does cut-ups of college players, that enable you to watch all of a prospect's plays in about 10 minutes per game. My favorite players to evaluate on DraftBreakdown.com are WRs, because their videos tend to be closer to five minutes long, and you can bang out a player's entire library in less than an hour. I watched Huff's entire library Saturday morning, and three things really stood out:

• While he's not a speedster like DeSean Jackson, Huff makes a lot of big plays. Typically, he does so by breaking tackles once he has the ball in his hands. Huff had at least one reception of 20+ in every single one of his 13 games in 2013. That's impressive explosiveness and consistency.

• Huff is an aggressive blocker. At a minimum, he'll contribute immediately on special teams, and his physical nature may get him on the field in the regular offense quickly.

• He has an issue with drops. The drops that I saw appear to be more of matter of a loss of concentration as opposed to bad hands. The Eagles' second round pick, Jordan Matthews, often struggled with drops in college, as did last year's second round pick Zach Ertz. The Eagles may think that issues with drops is a fixable trait.
