UNIONDALE, N.Y. - Top Flyers goaltending prospect Anthony Stolarz, a second-round pick in 2012, is counting his blessings after a scary skate cut on Friday night. Stolarz, 19, had the back of his leg accidentally stomped while playing for the OHL's London Knights.
Stolarz needed 55 stitches to close the wound. He was discharged from the hospital yesterday. Stolarz was not wearing a kevlar, cut-proof sock at the time.
"Word is that he was extremely lucky," Holmgren said. "He just missed a lot of important parts in there. Once he heals, he'll be just fine. There were no arteries [cut], no Achilles' tendon [sliced]. It just missed a major artery. There was a lot of blood for not hitting an artery."
Stolarz is expected to miss just 4 to 8 weeks of action, back well in time for London's playoff run. The Knights are hosting the Memorial Cup this year at Budweiser Gardens and Stolarz is expected to play a significant role in Canada's major junior national championship - an invaluable stage for his continued development.
