Looking to put his 39-year-old body through another NHL season, veteran forward Bill Guerin skated with a few members of the Flyers on Wednesday at the Skate Zone in Voorhees.

The unrestricted free agent, who played for Pittsburgh last year, said he was in town visiting family in Medford. Guerin said he asked his agent, Bob Murray, to contact Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren about arranging the informal skate.

Guerin said he wanted to be prepared in case a team makes him an offer. The Flyers had no comment.

"Right now, honestly, it's just about getting back on the ice," Guerin told a member of the Flyers' public relations staff. "I'm just getting myself in skating shape to be ready just in case anything happens somewhere."

Guerin, who turns 40 in November, was told by Pittsburgh last week that he would not be brought back. The Penguins acquired him from the New York Islanders at the trade deadline in 2009. He played 17 games to finish that regular season and helped the Penguins win their first Stanley Cup since 1992.

Last season, he was fifth on the Penguins in scoring (45 points) and tied for third in goals (21) in 78 regular-season games. Guerin has played for eight NHL teams in his 18-year career, compiling 429 goals and 427 assists.

"It was nice," he said of his workout. "It was good to finally get back on the ice and skate."
