Patrick Sharp and Jonathan Toews each scored in the second period, and the Chicago Blackhawks stretched their winning streak to five games with a 4-2 victory over the Minnesota Wild in St. Paul, Minn., on Monday night.

Toews had two assists and has 23 points in his last 14 games. Marian Hossa scored for the fourth straight game. Sharp's goal was his 33d of the season.

Edmonton forward Dustin Penner was the marquee player to change teams on an otherwise dull deadline day of dealing. The NHL-worst Oilers unloaded their star to the Los Angeles Kings for prospect defenseman Colten Teubert, a first-round pick this year, and another draft selection next year.

There were 16 deals Monday involving 35 players and 12 draft picks. This was the smallest number of trades on deadline day since 2000, when there were 12. The last time fewer players changed teams was in 2004 when 32 were dealt in 20 trades.

In addition to Penner, other familiar players on the move included center Jason Arnott, who waived his no-trade clause to go from New Jersey to Washington in a deal that sent Dave Steckel to the Devils; Fredrik Modin, who was dealt to Calgary by Atlanta for a seventh-round pick; and Carolina Hurricanes forward Sergei Samsonov, gone to Florida for Bryan Allen.

The Red Wings signed goaltender Jimmy Howard to a two-year, $4.5 million deal, keeping the soon-to-be free agent in Detroit, while Ottawa held on to defenseman Chris Phillips with a three-year, $9.25 million extension.

New York Rangers backup goalie Martin Biron suffered a broken collarbone after being struck with a shot during practice. He will be out indefinitely. New York called up Cam Talbot from the AHL's Connecticut Whale.
