The teams have met seven times in the postseason since, with the next meeting set to begin Thursday at the Wells Fargo Center.
Here is a rundown of the postseason history between the two teams:
1975: Stanley Cup finals,
Flyers win, 4-2
The Flyers won their second consecutive Cup, finishing off the Sabres, 2-0, in Game 6 in Buffalo. Game 3 was the legendary Fog Game. Due to unusual May heat in Buffalo, portions of the game were played in heavy fog. A bat flew above and around the players for most of the game, won by Buffalo, 5-4, in OT.
1978: Quarterfinals,
Flyers win, 4-2
Here is a random fact: Paul Holmgren had one playoff goal in 1978 and it came in the clincher of this series. Holmgren's best playoff year was 1980, with 10 goals and 10 assists in 18 games.
1995: Conference quarterfinals, Flyers win, 4-1
After a 5-year hiatus from the postseason, the Flyers open up with a 4-3 overtime win in Game 1 on a goal by Karl Dykhuis. They wrap up the series with a 6-4 win after scoring five unanswered goals, including four in the first period, only to see the Sabres eventually cut the margin to 5-3 in the third period.
1997: Conference semifinals, Flyers win, 4-1
The road to the Cup finals included 21 goals in five games against the Sabres. The Flyers set the tone by clawing back from a 3-1 deficit in Game 1, with a goal in the final second of the second period and three unanswered in the third.
1998: Conference quarterfinals, Sabres win, 4-1
A year after reaching the finals, the Flyers go out in the opening round. The teams split a pair of one-goal games, but the Sabres posted a 6-1 win in Game 3 and a 4-1 win in Game 4 at home before clinching in overtime in Philadelphia in Game 5.
2000: Conference quarterfinals, Flyers win, 4-1
Tight games throughout the series, but the Flyers dominated play in Game 5 with a 37-22 advantage in shots and a 3-1 lead heading into the third period of an eventual 5-2 win.
2001: Conference quarterfinals, Sabres win, 4-2
The Sabres won in OT in Games 2 and 4, but the memory from this one is the dreadful 8-0 loss in the clincher. Roman Cechmanek allowed five goals on the first nine shots before being pulled for Brian Boucher.
2006: Conference quarterfinals, Sabres win, 4-2
Again, the bitter taste came from a 7-1 drubbing in the clinching game, this time on home ice. ( Sabres had won, 8-2, in Game 2.) Robert Esche allowed five goals on 17 shots before being pulled for Antero Niittymaki.
