Devils' Brodeur hurt in 2-1 win over Kings

Johan Hedberg, who replaced injured Martin Brodeur at the start of the second period, made easy stops on former Flyer Simon Gagne and Anze Kopitar on the Kings' shootout chances.

Brodeur said he tweaked his right shoulder when he landed awkwardly while diving to make a blocker save.

Patrick Elias scored in regulation for New Jersey, and Gagne got his first goal as a King to open the game.

In other games: Miikka Kiprusoff got his team-record 263d win and Rene Bourque scored twice, leading the Calgary Flames to a 4-1 win over the Montreal Canadiens to spoil the Canadiens' home opener of their 103d season. . . . Jimmy Howard made 25 saves for his sixth career shutout, as the Detroit Red Wings beat the visiting Vancouver Canucks, 2-0. . . . Joakim Lindstrom scored twice and Jean-Sebastien Giguere made 15 saves in his first start for the Colorado Avalanche in a 7-1 rout of the host Ottawa Senators.

Crosby makes progress

Pittsburgh Penguins star Sidney Crosby was cleared for contact by team doctors for the first time since suffering a concussion in January.

Later, Dennis Wideman's power-play goal 2 minutes, 48 seconds into overtime lifted the Washington Capitals to a 3-2 win over the host Penguins. 

 Alexander Ovechkin scored his first goal of the season for the Capitals, who have won eight straight regular-season games in Pittsburgh.

Boogaard enters plea

The brother of former NHL strongman Derek Boogaard pleaded guilty in Minneapolis to a gross misdemeanor in his brother's overdose death for destroying evidence.

Aaron Boogaard, 25, reached a plea deal that lets him go free with a stayed six-month sentence, plus probation.

Boogaard admitted flushing pills down the toilet after finding his brother dead in his apartment on May 13.
