Blues slip past Wings, 3-2

David Backes got the go-ahead score on the second straight power-play goal of the game for the host St. Louis Blues, who ended a 2-for-39 slump with the man advantage in a 3-2 victory over the Detroit Red Wings on Tuesday night. Alex Steen had a power-play goal in the second period, and Brian Elliott made 27 saves for the Blues, who are 9-2-3 since Ken Hitchcock replaced Davis Payne as coach.

Jackets top Canadiens

Rick Nash's shootout goal lifted the Columbus Blue Jackets to a 3-2 win over the host Montreal Canadiens. Curtis Sanford was perfect in the tiebreaker, turning aside David Desharnais, Max Pacioretty, and Brian Gionta. Gionta scored a goal with 1 minute, 21 seconds left in regulation to send the game to overtime.

Bruins fall to Jets

Ondrej Pavelec made 39 saves and Bryan Little scored to help the host Winnipeg Jets beat the Boston Bruins, 2-1.

The Bruins lost in regulation for the first time since Oct. 29, ending a 15-game stretch in which they earned 29 of a possible 30 points.

The Jets (12-11-4) moved above the .500 mark for the first time this season.

Elsewhere: Matt Martin scored the second game-winning goal of his three-year NHL career, and the New York Islanders shook off a slow start and routed the Tampa Bay Lightning, 5-1, in Uniondale, N.Y. . . . David Clarkson scored twice, including 2:40 into overtime to give the New Jersey Devils a 3-2 win over the host Toronto Maple Leafs. . . . Keith Yandle scored with 1:45 remaining to give the Phoenix Coyotes a 3-2 victory over the host Nashville Predators.

Sabres call-up

With defenseman Jordan Leopold set to miss his third consecutive game with an upper-body injury, the Buffalo Sabres recalled Joe Finley from Rochester in the AHL. The Sabres open a five-game homestand against the Flyers on Wednesday.

Wild goalie injured

Minnesota Wild goalie Josh Harding left Tuesday night's game against the San Jose Sharks with an apparent neck injury 11 seconds after allowing a goal in the first minute of the game. Harding was hit in the face by his teammate, defenseman Nick Schultz, who was trying to block Sharks forward Joe Pavelski from the net. Harding went down immediately and was helped off the ice after several minutes.

Two games for Tootoo

The NHL suspended Nashville Predators forward Jordin Tootoo for two games without pay for charging Buffalo goaltender Ryan Miller.

Tootoo charged Miller during the second period in Saturday's game against the Sabres in Nashville. He was assessed a major penalty for charging and a game misconduct.
