NHL labor talks could resume soon

WHILE THE NHL and the players association stay away from the negotiating table, discussions have taken place behind the scenes in an effort to restart talks as a lockout deadline looms.

WHILE THE NHL and the players association stay away from the negotiating table, discussions have taken place behind the scenes in an effort to restart talks as a lockout deadline looms.

NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly and NHLPA special counsel Steve Fehr have discussed procedural details that could soon lead to a continuation of negotiations that broke off last week - perhaps as early as this week.

The current collective bargaining agreement between the NHL and the NHL Players Association expires Sept. 15.

The University of Oregon is implementing random drug testing of all its athletes, following a report earlier this year that estimated from 40 to 60 percent of the football team smoked marijuana.

* A coach arrested on a warrant from New York is accused in a lawsuit of fondling a teenage figure skater. The lawsuit filed in July in Prince George's County, Md., alleges Genrikh Sretenski touched her breasts in July 2011 in a hotel room. It also alleges he sent her more than 500 text messages. The lawsuit, filed by the girl's father, says the girl has ended her skating career because of what happened. As a result, it seeks $5 million in damages.
