Flyers sign Russian forward Roman Lyubimov

The Flyers signed 24-year-old forward Roman Lyubimov to a one-year, two-way entry-level contract on Monday.

The 6-foot-2, 207-pound Lyubimov spent the last six seasons in the Kontinental Hockey League with CSKA Moscow.

"He's a big guy. He skates well, plays a solid two-way game," Flyers general manager Ron Hextall said. "We feel like he adds depth to the organization. We'll see how he does in training camp."

Hextall said the team was aware of Lyubimov for the last couple of years, "but he really popped at the World Championships this past year" when he represented Russia and had four goals and four assists in 10 games.

With CSKA Moscow last season, Lyubimov set career highs with seven goals and seven assists in 52 games. He scored four goals and recorded four assists in 15 playoff games.

Hextall said Lyubimov could be a role player on the Flyers' third or fourth lines.

"I don't necessarily think he's going to be on your first power play, things like that," Hextall said. "But he's a hard worker. He goes to the net. He scores some dirty goals. He's got good size, and he skates fine."

The Flyers also signed Jordan Weal to a one-year, two-way entry-level deal.

Weal, a 5-foot-10, 179-pounder, was acquired in a trade with the Los Angeles Kings midway through last season for Vincent Lecavalier and Luke Schenn.

Weal played in just four games with the Flyers last season and 14 overall. He didn't register a point with the Flyers or Kings.

Pascal Laberge didn't think becoming a pro hockey player was possible until he turned 15. That's when he realized he was usually one of the best players on the ice.

Three years later, the 18-year-old Laberge still has to play two more seasons in junior hockey before he is old enough to join the pros, but he appears to be well on his way.

With the 36th overall pick, the Flyers selected Laberge in the second round of this year's NHL draft, and he participated in the team's developmental camp that concluded Monday in Voorhees.

"We worked a lot on quick release because, to play at a higher level, it's a lot faster than juniors," Laberge said. "So you've got to work to release the puck because you don't have much time in games."

Laberge spent last season with Victoriaville of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League and had 23 goals and 33 assists in 56 games.

The 6-foot-1 center weighs 162 pounds but plans to add 10 pounds each summer.

The development camp ended with a three-on-three tournament, which was won by the team that featured Robert Hagg, Ivan Provorov, Nicolas Aube-Kubel, Linus Hogberg, Radel Fazleev, and Carsen Twarynski. . . .
