Pronger's severity still unknown

UPDATE (1:45 pm): Confirming a Daily News report, Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren released a statement today saying Chris Pronger had his right foot X-rayed and underwent a CT scan.

The Flyers have nothing to report at this point.

"Chris will be re-evaluated [Friday] morning by a foot and ankle specialist and at that time, we will have a better idea of what we are dealing with," Holmgren said.

MONTREAL -- The term "lower body" in hockey can be a scary thing.

Especially when it involves Chris Pronger, who helped carry the Flyers to the Stanley Cup Final last year as team MVP.

Lower body can cover anything from groin, hip, lower back to hamstring, knee, and foot.

For Pronger, 36, the first thought of most when he didn't return to last night's win in Montreal in the third period with what the Flyers called a "lower body" injury was Pronger's knee.

Pronger, of course, missed all of training camp and the first two games of the season after his knee surgery in late July.

Fear not, Flyers fans: Pronger's knee was apparently not impacted on Wednesday night - even though Pronger admits he has never been at 100 percent this season.

Pronger missed the third period after taking a shot to the foot late in the second period. Pronger played the final 53 seconds of the second period and did not return for the third. He played a total of 15:54 over two periods.

The video replays do not show a clear or noticeable shot to the foot.

Unfortunately, all we know for now is that it's his foot. We have no idea as to the severity, if there is a fracture or any pain or swelling.

Even Pronger did not know the severity of his foot injury last night, as he declined to speak to the media frenzy that is Montreal after the game.

Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren said through a team spokesman that Pronger will be evaluated today in Philadelphia.

If Pronger, a 6-time All-Star, 2-time Olympic gold medalist and Stanley Cup winner, is not available to play on Saturday when the Rangers visit, the Flyers would likely turn to Oskars Bartulis. Bartulis has played just three games this season - Oct. 7 in Pittsburgh, Oct. 9 in St. Louis and Nov. 1 vs. Carolina.

You can bet that even if the Flyers don't practice on Thursday at the Skate Zone, coming off back-to-back games, that Bartulis will be on the ice. Just in case.
