Here is a look at the Flyers roster:

FORWARDS

Sean Couturier  6-foot-3,  211-pounds C: A defensive specialist, he will get a chance to improve his mediocre offensive game as he starts the season as the No. 1 center.

Valtteri Filppula  6-0, 196 C: The Flyers played much better after acquiring Filppula in a trade last season with Tampa Bay, and he balances the lines.

Claude Giroux  5-11,  185 LW/C: After a disappointing season (14 goals, 58 points), the former center won't have as much defensive responsibility and the Flyers hope he flourishes at LW.

Travis Konecny  5-10,  185 LW/RW: Coming off an 11-goal rookie season, Konecny was one of the team's best preseason players and he looks ready to take a big step.

Scott Laughton 6-1, 190 C: After improving his defense last year in the AHL, Laughton won a roster spot with a solid training camp and he will be a fourth-liner and a penalty-killer.

Jori Lehtera 6-2,  212 C: Acquired with two first-round picks in the deal that sent Brayden Schenn to St. Louis, the veteran forward is a versatile player who figures to have a utility role.

Taylor Leier 5-11, 177 LW: The new NHL was made for Leier, whose speed and elusiveness earned him a roster spot, and he will feel comfortable alongside his long-time Phantoms linemate, Laughton.

Nolan Patrick 6-2, 198 C: The No. 2 overall pick in the June draft, Patrick showed slick passing skills and a strong two-way game in training camp, earning the No. 2 center spot.

Michael Raffl  6-0, 200 LW/RW: He added seven pounds and some muscle in the off-season _ and it helped him win board battles during an impressive camp.

Wayne Simmonds 6-2, 183 RW: The Flyers' MVP last season and the quintessential power forward, he has been the picture of consistency the last four years, scoring 29, 28, 32 and 31 goals.

Jake Voracek  6-2, 214  RW: The Flyers believe Voracek can get closer to the 81-point season he produced in 2014-15 after a pedestrian (for him) 61 points and a minus-24 rating last year.

Jordan Weal  5-9,  179 LW: After scoring eight goals in his final 19 games last season _ he and Simmonds worked well together _ the shifty Weal seems ready to blossom.

Dale Weise 6-2, 205 LW/RW: Weise struggled through most of last season (finishing with eight goals), found his game in the final month, and won a job with a good camp.

DEFENSEMEN

Shayne Gostisbehere 5-11, 186. Whether able to rebound from sophomore slump will be key variable for this team's chances

Radko Gudas 6-0, 204. Big shot, big hits. Veteran will be good influence on the young D men

Robert Hagg 6-2, 210. Mature head on these shoulders: Altered from an offense-first D-man to stay-at-homer to make NHL.

Andrew MacDonald 6-1, 190. Played better at tail end of last year, but Flyers need more from him.

Samuel Morin 6-7, 225. A beast, he will make rookie mistakes — but you won't take your eyes off him when he's out there.

Ivan Provorov 6-0, 203. Every great D corps has a sergeant. Only in his second season, that's him.

Travis Sanheim 6-3, 205. The Flyers were right to value him higher than other teams in the 2014 draft.

Brandon Manning 6-1, 205. Finished -12 last season, after finishing plus-2 the year before.

GOALIES

Michal Neuvirth 6-0, 209. 11-11-1, 2.82, .891. Says he wants to be the man. At 29, time is now

Brian Elliott 6-2, 209 26-18-3, 2.55. .910. Played well from November on until playoff disaster. How will that affect him this season?
