Six golfers qualify for U.S. Amateur

Brandon Detweiler of Akron, Lancaster County, won medalist honors Monday at the 36-hole qualifying event for the U.S. Amateur, carding a 5-under-par 139 at Cedarbrook Country Club and Sunnybrook Golf Club.

Detwiler, who is entering his senior season at North Carolina State, shot a 2-under 70 at Cedarbrook in Blue Bell, then tied for low round of the day with a 69 at Sunnybrook in Plymouth Meeting. He played his last 10 holes at Sunnybrook in 3 under.

Amory Davis of Chadds Ford and the University of Virginia, also entering his senior season, took second at 141 thanks to four back-nine birdies in his afternoon round of 70 at Cedarbrook.

In a three-way tie for third at 142 were Philadelphia Open champion Michael Brown of Cheltenham, Rob Savarese of Lafayette Hill and Marc Mandel of Conshohocken.

Henry Smart of Charlottesville, Va., who carded a 143, grabbed the sixth and final spot in a playoff.

The U.S. Amateur begins Aug. 23 at Chambers Bay in University Place, Wash.
