Stricker's putter prevails at Memorial

He closed with a 4-under 68, lagging from 20 feet for a two-putt bogey on the 18th hole. By then, the hard work was over. The 44-year-old Stricker twice saved par from bunkers on the 16th and 17th holes, making putts of 15 feet and 7 feet to go to the last hole with a 2-shot lead.

Stricker finished at 16-under 272 for his 10th PGA Tour title and sixth in three years. He moved to No. 4 in the world, becoming the highest-ranked American golfer.

Champions Tour

WEST DES MOINES, Iowa - Bob Gilder made a 30-foot birdie putt on No. 18, then escaped with a 1-stroke victory in the Principal Charity Classic when Mark Brooks bogeyed the hole.

Brooks hit into the water on 17, then three-putted on 18 to hand the title to Gilder.

The 60-year-old Gilder closed with a 6-under 65 for a 14-under 199 total. Brooks, the leader after the first two rounds, shot a 68.

NEWPORT, Wales - Alexander Noren won the Wales Open for his second European Tour title, closing with a 1-under 70 for a 2-stroke victory at Celtic Manor.
