Phoenix Open stalls with Palmer in lead

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. - Ryan Palmer parred his final hole at dusk for a 7-under 64 and the lead Thursday in the suspended first round of the Phoenix Open.

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. - Ryan Palmer parred his final hole at dusk for a 7-under 64 and the lead Thursday in the suspended first round of the Phoenix Open.

The start of the round was delayed an hour because of frost, and play was suspended because of darkness at 6:05 p.m.

Webb Simpson was a stroke back at TPC Scottsdale. At No. 6 in the world, he is the top-ranked player in the field.

Kyle Stanley, in the news Sunday for his spectacular choke on the 18th hole at Torrey Pines, had a 2-under 69.

PGA European Tour

DOHA, Qatar - Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano finished with three straight birdies for a 6-under 66 at the Qatar Masters, overcoming wind and blowing sand to lead after the first round.

The Spaniard credited his putting. He holed several putts of more than 20 feet on his way to nine birdies to go along with three bogeys.

John Daly (67) was a shot behind, followed by K.J. Choi (68) and Jason Day (68). Six players, including 1999 British Open champion Paul Lawrie and Nicolas Colsaerts, are 3 shots off the pace.
