Farrow takes lead in Philadelphia Section PGA play

Greg Farrow of Deerwood Country Club fired a 3-under-par 68 Thursday to take the lead at the end of the first round of the Philadelphia Section PGA Championship at White Manor Country Club in Malvern.

Heavy rain Tuesday washed out the first day of competition and did enough damage to delay the start of play Wednesday. So half of the players competed Wednesday and the other half, which included Farrow, on Thursday.

The field was cut to the low 67 players who shot 76 or better, with the final round being played Friday.

Farrow carded five birdies and two bogeys in his round to finish 1 stroke ahead of Travis Deibert of Commonwealth National, who posted his round Wednesday.

Bill Sautter of Philadelphia Cricket Club and Jake Gerney of Trump National-Philadelphia both shot 71 Thursday to move into a tie for fifth.

Tee times Friday start at 8:30 a.m., with the leaders going off at 10:20. The top 12 finishers will qualify for next summer's PGA Professional National Championship.

Segal Classic. The 23d Jerry Segal Classic for the benefit of Magee Rehabilitation Hospital tees off Friday at the ACE Club and Green Valley Country Club in Lafayette Hill. The event has raised about $10.5 million under the leadership of Segal, a Philadelphia lawyer who was left a quadriplegic in 1982 but was able to walk again after a stay at Magee. - Joe Juliano
