Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy missed the cut at the Abu Dhabi Championship on Friday, a woeful start to the season for the world's top two golfers.

Woods missed it after he was penalized 2 shots for wrongly taking a free drop, while top-ranked McIlroy was frustrated trying to adjust to his new Nike clubs, even though he used his old Titleist putter in the second round. Both finished with 3-over 75s.

Justin Rose played solid, mistake-free golf. Away from the large galleries, the Englishman shot a 69 for a 136 total and a 1-shot lead at the halfway point over Jamie Donaldson (70) of Wales, Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano (67) of Spain, and Thorbjorn Olesen (69) of Denmark.

James Hahn and Roberto Castro remained atop the Humana Challenge leaderboard Friday, shooting 5-under 67 on the PGA West's Arnold Palmer Private Course in the pro-am tournament in La Quinta, Calif. Hahn and Castro were at 14 under after the second round.

Phil Mickelson shot a 67 on PGA West's Jack Nicklaus Private Course after opening with an even-par 72 at La Quinta.

SOCCER: The Union will open their preseason training camp on Monday at 9:30 a.m. at YSC Sports in Wayne. The first session is open to the public. The Union will train in the area until Feb. 7, when they will move their camp to Florida.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL: The Maryland attorney general filed a lawsuit against the Atlantic Coast Conference on Friday, saying its approximately $53 million exit fee for the University of Maryland's departure to the Big Ten is invalid and unenforceable.

Attorney General Douglas F. Gansler filed the suit on behalf of the school and its board of regents in Prince George's County Circuit Court.

Former Rutgers coach Greg Schiano must pay the school the $300,000 balance of an interest-free loan he got to build a multimillion dollar home in Piscataway, N.J., by Jan. 26.

Schiano, who resigned last January to coach the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, has been trying to sell the house since April and has cut the price twice, to $1.95 million from $2.3 million. The coach bought land from the university and was given the $800,000 loan from the athletic department in 2007 to build a house about two minutes from the school's High Point Solutions Stadium.

Under the agreement, the school forgave $100,000 of the loan each season Schiano remained as coach, with any balance remaining when he resigned due one year later.

SKIING: Alexis Pinturault of France used his superior slalom skills to win a World Cup super-combined, while American Ted Ligety skied out in Wengen, Switzerland.
