DID YOU KNOW?
* Rory McIlroy's eight-shot victory a year ago broke the record of seven that had stood since 1980, when Jack Nicklaus won by that many at Baltusrol.
* The win was McIlroy's fourth on the PGA Tour, making him only the fourth player since 1960 to do that before reaching age 24. The others were Nicklaus, Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson. McIlroy became the first major winner since Mickelson at the 2010 Masters to have a bogey-free final round.
* Ian Poulter had five consecutive birdies (Nos. 1-5) in the final round, the most in a major since Tiger Woods (7-13) in the third round of the 2005 Masters, which he won.
* Six Europeans have now won this major, three in the last 5 years. The others are Jim Barnes (1916 and '19), Jock Hutchison (1920), Tommy Armour (1930), Padraig Harrington (2008) and Martin Kaymer (2010).
* Aside from Barnes, who won the inaugural one, seven others have won this major on their first try: Tom Creavy (1931), Bob Hamilton (1944), Doug Ford (1955), Bob Tway (1986), John Daly (1991), Shaun Micheel (2003) and Keegan Bradley (2011).
* Five more have won in their second appearance: Bob Rosburg (1959), Gary Player (1962), Nicklaus (1963), Hal Sutton (1983) and Rich Beem (2002). Nicklaus was runner-up a record four times (1964, '65, '74 and '83).
* There have been 13 playoffs since 1961. The first two were 18 holes, the next seven sudden death. The last four, starting in 2000, have been three holes. Don January and Lanny Wadkins, who both went 1-1, are the only two guys who've been involved in more than one.
* There have been seven wire-to-wire winners: Bobby Nichols (1964), Raymond Floyd (1969 and '82), Hal Sutton (1983), Nick Price (1994), Tiger Woods (2000) and Phil Mickelson (2005).
* The closest a club professional has come to winning was 1971 when 54-year-old Tommy Bolt finished third, three behind Nicklaus. But Bolt had won the 1958 U.S. Open. In 1972, 60-year-old Sam Snead, a seven-time major winner and three-time PGA champ, tied for fourth, also three behind Nicklaus.
