Timber Creek, Seneca win titles without champs

Despite not having a wrestler reach the top step of the podium, Timber Creek and Seneca each made school history. The Chargers earned their first team district championship yesterday, holding off runner-up Washington Township by four points, at District 30 competition at Overbrook.

Despite not having a wrestler reach the top step of the podium, Timber Creek and Seneca each made school history.

The Chargers earned their first team district championship yesterday, holding off runner-up Washington Township by four points, at District 30 competition at Overbrook.

Seneca accomplished the same feat at District 27, utilizing five second-place finishes to capture its first team crown.

The top three wrestlers in each district move in to regional competition, which begins on Tuesday with preliminary and pre-quarterfinal action. Districts 25-28 will convene at Region 7 at Moorestown. Districts 29-32 will wrestle at Region 8 at Absegami. The regional tournament will conclude on Saturday.

Oddly, Timber Creek didn't have a single individual champion but had enought depth to conquer the field. The Chargers had five runners-up in Paul Bauberger (119 pounds), Sly Hall (135), Joe Lowry (145), Bryan Hummell (215) and Rich Bilo (Hwt.).

Washington Township sent five wrestlers to the finals and all were crowned champions - James Higgins (103), Anthony Curcio (112), Frank Higgins (125), Tommy Williamson (160) and Lavar Archie (Hwt.).

Williamstown's Zach Cohen garnered the Outstanding Wrestler award. Cohen, a third-seed, won the 119-pound title after behind second-seeded Jameel Johnson, of Overbrook, 3-2, in the semifinals and top-seeded Bauberger, 7-0 in the final.

Hammonton's Dave Mauriello was honored as the district's Coach of the Year. Two years removed from a 1-19 record, the Blue Devils accumulated a school-record 23 wins this winter.
