Sabara's slam triggers Washington's romp past Saul

George Washington found itself down by two runs at Saul when Eddie Sabara stepped to the plate yesterday. The Razorbacks' lead didn't last longer than that as Sabara hit a second-inning grand slam to right field that gave the Eagles the lead for good in a 17-5 Public League baseball win.

Sabara, a senior first baseman, finished with six RBIs on two hits. Teammate Marquis Murray was 4 for 5.

In other league games:

Frankford got a big day from Jeffry Bru in a 12-1 win over visiting Edison. Bru stroked a pair of doubles and a triple and scored three runs.

Micah Winterstein pitched a two-hitter and Mike Braun drove in four runs as Central routed host Lincoln, 17-0.

Roosevelt Castro went 4 for 4 with four RBIs as host West Philadelphia outlasted Martin Luther King, 13-10, giving Shawn Hoffman his first varsity win as head coach. Arsenio Gates pitched all seven innings for the Speedboys, striking out 14.

Malik Marell's three-run double in the third inning helped host Swenson break open a close game and pound Germantown, 11-1.

Bartram got four hits from Tom Lloyd and three more from Mike Divers in a 16-11 win over visiting Nueva Esperanza.

Suburban One National. Devon Bailey pitched a three-hitter for Bensalem in its 1-0 win over visiting North Penn.

Suburban One Continental. Kyle Greenwalt pitched a complete-game two-hitter and struck out 11 as host Souderton nipped Council Rock North, 2-0.

Nonleague. In Fort Pierce, Fla., Chestnut Hill Academy got a two-hit complete game from pitcher Michael Mattei in a 7-0 win over Buckingham, Brown and Nichols Prep (N.Y.). Anthony Cafagna was 3 for 3 with a pair of RBIs for the Blue Devils (7-1), who have won five of their six games in Florida.

Three pitched combined for a no-hitter in host Cardinal O'Hara's 10-0 win over Cardinal Dougherty. Mike Smith, who pitched the first three innings, was credited with the win.

' Cheri Carter pitched a no-hitter and barely broke a sweat.

Carter pitched three innings, striking out four and walking none, as Dobbins overwhelmed visiting Olney, 18-1, in a Public League game.

Due to the 15-run rule, the game was stopped after three innings.

Ashley Robinson struck out 14 for Lincoln in its 8-1 win at Washington. Justine Pearson had two of the Railsplitters' four hits.

Edison scored six runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to close out a 13-3 win over visiting Frankford. The Owls (2-0) were led by Stephanie Adoro, who had four RBIs.

Alissa Williams, back from an injury after missing all of last season, returned in style by pitching a no-hitter for host Central in an 11-1 win over Northeast. Williams struck out eight.

Kanesha McEwen scored twice, once on a corner kick, to lead host

McEwen's corner was wind-aided and took one bounce and hopped over the Freire Charter goalie. McEwen also scored on a direct kick.

Ellen Kaufmann's two goals proved to be the difference for Central in a 3-1 win at Masterman.

Philadelphia Academy Charter got three goals from Jessica Davies in an 8-0 win over visiting Bodine. The Chargers led, 7-0, at the half.
