Cherokee tops Buena to win S. Jersey Baseball Classic

yesterday in the championship game of the inaugural South Jersey Baseball Classic at Washington Township.

Wilson (4-0), a junior righthander who also beat Absegami and Gloucester Catholic in earlier rounds of the tournament, scattered six hits and struck out eight batters.

Cherokee (10-0) had just five hits, but capitalized on 11 walks and left a dozen runners on base, including leaving the bases loaded in the first inning.

The teams traded runs in the fourth inning as Cherokee's Dan Haverstick scored on a bases-loaded walk, and Buena (8-2) answered with Wade Battelini's RBI double that scored Marco Carolla.

In the fifth, Allen's two-run double proved to be the game-winning hit, and Cherokee added an insurance score in the seventh when Chris Carlontonio doubled, stole third and scored on a wild pitch.

"Everyone was real happy" about the new tournament, Cherokee coach Bill Haessler said of the eight-team, double-elimination event that started on April 5. "They liked the format and nobody could lose more than two games.

"The key to winning it is to stay away from doubleheaders. If you can, it saves your pitching. At the end of the season, we're going to ask teams for next year's tournament based on the Top 20 from this season."

Cherry Hill East

defeated

Moorestown

for the third time this season and captured second place at the Brian Bennett Memorial tournament at Delbarton, which featured many of the state's top teams.

In the semifinals, East edged Moorestown, 3-2, as freshman Max Rubin rallied from a 3-4 deficit in the third-set tiebreaker to clinch the match, 6-2, 4-6, 7-6 (7-5), over Gabe Allen at third singles.

Westfield swept the doubles matches and won at third singles in the final and beat East, 3-2, for the title. The Cougars (8-2) won in straight sets at first and second singles with Ravi Yegya Raman and Ross Silverberg.
