Malvern Prep's Joe Hoban, a standout football and basketball player, has chosen to play hoops at the next level.

The 6-foot-1, 175-pound Hoban has orally committed to Colgate, whose coaches grew interested after noticing his abilities at an AAU tournament last month at Penn State.

Hoban, of West Chester, will be a nonscholarship player as a freshman. "As long as I play well and do what the coaches think I can do, they said I would get one of their scholarships in my sophomore year," he said.

As a point guard for Malvern Prep last season, Hoban averaged about 12 points and five assists per game. He helped lead the Friars to a 19-9 overall record and 7-3 mark in the Inter-Ac League.

In football, Hoban starred at wide receiver and also played defensive back. New Hampshire had offered him a partial scholarship.

"I'm sure I'll miss football when I see other guys playing it," he said. "But I have a bigger passion for basketball."
