Frederick loses sleep, but not high jump

So much for getting proper rest the night before a track meet.

Priscilla Frederick didn't. And the Paul VI senior still managed to etch her name in the South Jersey and Camden County track-and-field record books yesterday.

Having slept for just three hours after the senior prom, Frederick won the Division II [large schools] girls' high jump with a personal-best and meet-record leap of 5 feet, 91/4 inches in the Camden County championships.

Her effort at Haddon Township High also tied the South Jersey record set by Ocean City's Mandi Wolicki in 1995.

The previous county meet record of 5-8 was set by Cherry Hill East's Erin Halpin in 1986 and tied by Haddon Heights' Briana Gray two seasons ago.

In addition to breaking that record, Frederick finished third in the Division II long jump with a 16-51/4.

For her efforts, the St. John's recruit was named the girls' outstanding field performer of the meet. After receiving her medals, she rushed home to get some well-deserved rest.

"I had senior prom [Friday] night," Frederick said. "I didn't get to bed until about 3:30, 4 o'clock. And my main goal was just to perform well and get first.

"It was not my intention to clear 5-9. But I'm very proud."

Highland's Mike Daniels was also very proud of his performances.

The senior won the Division II boys' shot put (53-11/2) and discus (153-9) en route to being named the boys' outstanding field performer.

The title could have easily gone to Woodrow Wilson's Rhodnei Spence, who won the Division II boys' triple jump with a new meet record of 46-10.

The meet does not name outstanding runners.

In the team portion of the meet, Camden scored 108 points to win its second Division II boys' title in three seasons. Sterling (85.5 points) won the Division I boys' crown.

On the girls' side, Woodrow Wilson (84.5) won the Division II title. Haddonfield (136) captured the Division I crown.
