Penncrest's Shump sets district shot-put record
The junior took her third title with a heave of 48 feet, 3 1/4 inches. She had been hoping for more.
Once again, Karen Shump failed to get the distance she coveted. The Penncrest junior did, however, post another record-setting performance.
Shump broke the PIAA Class AAA girls' shot put meet record at yesterday's District 1 track and field championships at Coatesville.
She claimed her third consecutive district title with a heave of 48 feet, 31/4 inches, bettering the mark of 47-111/2 she set in the third flight.
The all-American had set meet records in each of the last two seasons.
Vanita Moses of Neshaminy finished second in 43-101/4. Gabriella Rinehart was third (41-73/4).
The top five finishers in each Class AAA event automatically qualified for next weekend's PIAA track and field championships at Shippensburg University. The sixth-, seventh- and eighth-place finishers advance if they reach the qualifying standard.
Like most qualifiers, Shump was excited about going back to Shippensburg. That was different from last season, when she was disappointed with her winning effort.
"This is not bad," the two-time defending state champion said of yesterday's distance. "I really wish that I would have thrown 49 and, hopefully, 50. I was really trying to get that. But I really had a good sequence today."
Moses - not Shump - highlighted the competition early on. The Neshaminy senior posted her 43-101/4 heave on her first attempt of the third flight. As a result, Moses held the meet's record for the next few minutes. Shump's winning effort of 43-91/4 from last season was the record heading into the meet.
"When I looked out there, I said to myself '39 feet,' " said Moses, whose previous personal record was 40-4. "I was like, 'Man.' And soon as I walked away, [the official] goes, '43.' I stopped and was like, 'What? What?'
"Oh, my God. It feels great to know that I had the record for just a little bit. After I did it, I was like, 'Yes!' "
Three competitors later, Shump shattered Moses' mark with an opening heave of 47-01/2. She followed that up with a 47-111/2 on the last throw of the flight. Shump then produced the winning distance on her second attempt in the final.
"Karen is great," Moses said. "She doesn't like to brag about herself. But I'll do it for her. She's great. I learn a lot by watching her."
North Penn's Stephanie McDougal learned that she could excel despite being injured. The senior won her second straight Class AAA girls' pole vault with an 11-6 effort despite a sore right hamstring. Council Rock South sophomore Tory Worthen also cleared 11-6. McDougal was awarded the victory after having fewer misses at that height.
"Even if I'm sore, I still have to come in with a positive attitude," said the East Carolina recruit, who has a personal-best height of 12-6. "I have that problem with saying 'I'm sore. I don't want to do this.' I came in and had to do it."
Delaware County Christian's Ed Roberts also had a performance to be proud of. The junior won his second consecutive Class AA boys' triple-jump title in 44-91/4.
Bristol sophomore David Cuevas and Methacton junior Ryann Krais were two other athletes who successfully defended titles.
Cuevas won his second consecutive Class AA boys' shot-put title (48-61/2), while Krais nabbed her second straight Class AAA girls' long-jump crown (19-0).
Krais also ran her classification's meet-record time of 13.98 seconds in yesterday's trials of the 100-meter hurdles. The standout set the previous record of 14.26 in 2005.
The winner of each Class AA event automatically qualified for the state meet, along with any top-eight finisher that reached the state-qualifying standard.
The meet resumes today at 9 a.m.
