Pa. Boys | Phelps lands Tri-County lacrosse title
Woodlynde was faced with the unenviable task of defying an old sports adage about how hard it is to beat a good team three times in a season yesterday.
Woodlynde
was faced with the unenviable task of defying an old sports adage about how hard it is to beat a good team three times in a season yesterday.
The adage held up and, as a result, Phelps escaped with a 7-4 win for the Tri-County League lacrosse championship over host Woodlynde at West Valley Park.
The Warriors beat Phelps twice in the regular season but couldn't take any of those goals into the championship game.
Brandon Hartman led the Lions with three goals and Justin Czajkowski added two goals and an assist.
Also contributing to the Phelps' effort were Teddy Gordon-Hardy and John Flok, who each had a goal and an assist.
Woodlynde just could not match its offensive production in the previous two games against Phelps, scoring 12 goals in each of the two wins. That could have been at least partly due to the excellent game of goalie Nathaniel Blakely, who turned back 21 shots.
Trevor Nevius found the range twice for Woodlynde, which also got goals from Will Judd and Pat Brennan.
Baseball
Pitcher Steve Young helped himself with a home run and four RBIs as host
Spring-Ford
defeated
Central Bucks East
, 9-2, in a PIAA District 1 Class AAAA second-round game.
Young pitched pretty well, too, for the Rams, the No. 4 seed out of the South. He went the seven-inning distance and gave up just three hits. One of the two runs was earned.
Young had as many hits as he gave up. Jon Hayes, batting in front of him in the No. 2 slot in the order, went 2 for 4 with two runs scored.
In other second-round games:
Future Villanova University righty Dave Koczirka was dominating for host West Chester East in an 11-1 win over Cheltenham.
Koczirka pitched a complete game and gave up just three hits as the No. 2 seed out of the South topped the North's No. 7 seed.
Bobby Jacobs, headed to Penn State, led a 10-hit attack for the Vikings, going 3 for 3 with a pair of RBIs. Teammate Ryan McCafferty went 2 for 2 with three RBIs. McCafferty is committed to Georgia Southern.
Ryan Brown had half of Souderton's hits, going 2 for 3 with two RBIs, in an 8-4 win win visiting Pennsbury.
The Indians (17-3), the No. 2 seed out of the North, scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take an 8-1 lead before the Falcons mounted a rally ion the seventh that fell short.
Matt Frei pitched four solid innings to get the win for host Quakertown to a 5-4 win over West Chester Henderson.
The Panthers (15-5) pounded out nine hits, led by Donnie Krenitsky, who went 3 for 3 with three RBIs. Jason Rathgens and Harry Schmitt each had two hits apiece.
Art Hirsch pitched a five-hitter for host Truman in its 5-2 win over Haverford High. John Barrington's two-run homer in the first inning got the Tigers off to a good start.
Zach Huff won his seventh game in as many starts as host Pennridge nipped Neshaminy, 6-3. Huff gave up just five hits, struck out six and walked two. Brad Herrmann hit two home runs for the Rams (17-3).
Tri-County. Host West-Mont Christian captured its 14th straight league title with an 11-1 win over Phelps, as John Hane pitched all five innings and gave up only four hits. He struck out 11.
The win avenged one of the few league defeats for West-Mont Christian, a 7-6 home loss early in the season. West-Mont Christian won the subsequent game between the teams, 18-1.
Jack Tomkinson and Azad Lassiter each stroked a pair of hits for West-Mont Christian. Teammate Kevin McCardell had a bases-loaded single in the fourth inning and later stole home in the same inning.
Catholic. In a league quarterfinal game at Philadelphia University, Kevin Culbert pitched a two-hitter as Cardinal O'Hara blanked Archbishop Carroll, 6-0. Culbert struck out 10 and walked only one.
The win advanced the Lions (14-7) into the league semifinals on Saturday afternoon (2:30 p.m.) against Northern Division top seed Archbishop Ryan.
O'Hara got on the scoreboard late, scoring a run in the fourth, three more in the fifth and two more in the sixth.
Pat Young led the offense by going 2 for 3 with a run scored and an RBI and Steve Juliano was 1 for 3 with two RBIs. Joe Colleluori and Greg D'Alonzo stroked doubles for Cardinal O'Hara.
In the other league quarterfinal at Widener, host North Catholic scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to edge rival Father Judge, 10-9.
The key hit in the game was Chris James' RBI-single that broke a 9-9 tie. Just prior to that, a throwing error allowed the Falcons to tie the game.
Keegan Smith pitched two innings of relief to earn the win for North Catholic, which faces St. Joseph's Prep in a noon semifinal on Saturday at Widener University.
The highlight for the Crusaders was a grand slam off the bat of Joe Ashdale in the fourth inning.
