Methacton's Krais adds two more state crowns

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - The dictionary defines "greatness" as "something of outstanding importance."
In track, having someone with that quality is a huge asset. Great athletes can be flexible, dominate multiple events and are extremely important to their team's success.
Ryann Krais of Methacton fits that description.
The junior won the Class AAA 100-meter hurdles in a meet-record time of 13.73 seconds at yesterday's PIAA track and field championships.
Krais bettered the 13.88 she posted in yesterday morning's semifinals. Penn Wood's Dawn Burrell had set the previous record of 13.96 in 1991.
Krais then ran a time of 42.04 to win her third consecutive 300 hurdles title at Shippensburg University's Seth Grove Stadium.
She ended the day by anchoring the Methacton 4x400 relay team, which finished third in 3 minutes, 53.16 seconds.
Krais accomplished all that a day after winning her second consecutive long-jump title. Krais' greatest attribute may be unselfishness.
After the meet, she did not boast about winning three gold medals. Instead, she cried in the infield because her relay teammates - Alicia Melnick, Courtney DeGemmis and Eileen McCarthy - did not get gold.
"I feel a little guilty," said Krais, who ran a 54.4-second anchor leg to bring her team from fifth place.
"I wish that I could have done something more for this team. I'm sorry."
What more could Krais do? She had a hand in all of Methacton's 36 points, good enough for second in the Class AAA girls' team standings. Easton scored 38 to win the championship.
While Methacton just missed a team title, District 12 swept the Class AA championships. Engineering & Science scored 37 points to win the boys' crown, and Swenson was the runaway winner on the girls' side, with 50 points.
First-year school Bayard Rustin was second with 34.
McDowell (39) edged out runner-up North Penn (36) for the Class AAA boys' championship.
Freshman Shanae Bailey and sophomore Anthonia "Mouse" Ballard had a lot to do with Swenson's success. Bailey won her classification's 100 (12.02) and 200 (24.58) titles. Ballard finished first in the 300 hurdles (43.96) and fifth in the 100 hurdles (15.20). The duo also joined freshmen Jayee Wright and Vanessa Mack to win the 4x100 with a meet-record time (47.84). Quaker Valley set the previous record (48.56) last season.
Bailey was not around when Swenson received its first-place team trophy.
The 15-year-old was rushed to Chambersburg Hospital after her victory in the 200 because of heat exhaustion. She was treated and released, according to a District 12 official.
Jamar Jones was the MVP of the E&S championship team. The senior won the Class AA boys' 800 (1:53.75) and teamed up with Austin Perron, Victor Roseboro and Terence Lee on the Engineers' first-place 4x800 relay team (7:54.70). He also joined Perron, Byron Dailey and Derek Ferguson on E&S' second-place 4x400 team (3:21.87) .
It was the second straight season that Jones won the 800 and ran on the Engineers' winning 4x800 team.
E&S junior Benita Taylor did one better, winning the Class AA girls' 800 (2:14.83) and running on the winning 4x400 team (3:56.27) for the third straight season in both events. This season, Jonae McAllister, Acoya Goines and Kasia Taylor joined Benita Taylor on the relay.
Hatboro-Horsham's Joe Berry, Cheltenham's Brandon Bing and Abington's Jarret Eaton posted impressive performances in the Class AA boys' portion of the meet. Berry finished first in the pole vault with a meet-record vault of 16 feet, 3 inches. The previous mark (16-2) was set last season by Laurel Highlands Jared Jodon.
Bing swept the 200 (21.33) and 400 (46.84) races, and Eaton won the 110 (14.11) and 300 (37.41) hurdles.
Imhotep Charter's Herman Kirkland won the Class AA boys' long jump at 22-5. He became the school's first state champion in any sport.
