Franklin Learning Center senior Jacob Wasco recently gave an oral commitment to play basketball at the University of Maryland-Baltimore County.

The 6-foot-8 center chose the Retrievers over La Salle, Boston University and St. Peter's (N.Y.).

"He visited the school. He liked it and committed," FLC coach Cedric Powell said of Wasco's accepting UMBC's full-scholarship offer. "La Salle was looking for him to redshirt."

Powell said the Retrievers are impressed with the first-year starter's size and ability to get up and down the floor.

Wasco scored the game-winning basket in the Bobcats' 63-61 overtime victory over La Salle High on Tuesday. He finished with four points in the season opener. FLC's next contest is Tuesday at Central.

Wasco averaged 1.1 points last season in limited action as the backup to Dante Wooten.
