Bailey leads way for Swenson girls

The sophomore won three races and anchored the winning 4x100 relay squad.

Batons are passed off for the anchor leg of the Class AAA 4x800 relay. Dobbins' Paul Catchings, Jermaine Leslie, Dominique Robinson and Jonathan Holland won the event in 8:44.01.

Shanae Bailey does have a weakness.

The Swenson sophomore freezes when asked to talk about herself.

Not even a minute into an interview, Bailey becomes very uneasy. The sprinter's eyes wander, and she takes a deep breath before speaking while keeping her hands in her pockets.

"She really doesn't talk a lot," Swenson assistant coach Tim Hickey said. "You never really have to worry about her having a big head."

Instead of using a track meet as a social event, Bailey takes a businesslike approach. Her performances do the talking.

Yesterday, Bailey's effort spoke volumes at the Class AA girls' District 12 championships.

She took individual titles in the 100 and 200 meters and the 100 hurdles in the competition at Northeast High. Bailey also anchored Swenson's winning 4x100 relay. Having a hand in 40 points, the 16-year-old helped lead the Lions to the Class AA district title.

Swenson's 165.5 points were way ahead of the 117 scored by runner-up Engineering & Science. Paul Robeson (113), Masterman (81.5) and School of the Future (27) rounded out the top five.

"She had a good meet," Lions coach Dean Lent said. "She did basically everything we asked her to do."

And then some.

Bailey was not expected to win the 100 hurdles. Her teammate, Anthonia "Mouse" Ballard, was.

But despite being a novice in the event, Bailey had a commanding lead midway through the race and won it in 15.31 seconds. Ballard finished a distant second in 16.19, while Swenson's Khristy Neou was third in 16.64.

"I was proud of myself in the hurdles," Bailey reluctantly said, "because I was hitting the hurdles before. I didn't do as good as I think I can do time-wise."

Now, that's scary, considering that her clocking was among the 20 fastest times in Pennsylvania this season.

While that victory came as a surprise, Bailey's other three wins were expected. She is recognized as the state's fastest girl regardless of classification.

Bailey came into the meet with Pennsylvania best's time in the 100 at 11.81 seconds. But looking merely to advance to the PIAA state championships, Bailey ran at 80 percent of her capacity. And she still dominated.

Bailey easily won the 100 in 12.11. Her time was way ahead of 12.42 posted by Engineering & Science's Cierra White, the runner-up.

Bailey also was the runaway winner in the 200 in 25.01 seconds.

She also teamed with Jayee Wright, Ballard and Vanessa Mack on the Lions' winning 4x100 relay team (47.73 seconds). Engineering & Science (49.19) and Paul Robeson (49.66) finished second and third.

"She just ran four solid races," Hickey said. "None of them were personal records. But they were four solid races."

On the boys' side, Khaliff Featherstone of Simon Gratz and Herman Kirkland of Imhotep Charter had impressive outings.

Competing in the Class AAA meet, Featherstone won the 200 (22.37) and 400 (48.46). He joined Frank Wainwright, Jonathan Williams and Yuwshua Davis on the Bulldogs' winning 4x400 relay team (3:26.13).

One day removed from winning the Class AA long jump, Kirkland won his classification's 100 (11.19) and 200 (20.50) titles.

The Class AA winner and top-two Class AAA finishers in each event automatically advance to the PIAA state championships on May 23-24 at Shippensburg University.
