Shump shows emotion after making history

The Penncrest senior is the first girl to win four state Class AAA shot-put crowns.

Methacton's Ryann Krais won the girls' AAA long jump with a leap of 19 feet, 2 inches. She also won the high jump at 5-5 and broke her own meet record in a 100-meter hurdles preliminary.

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - Karen Shump's voice cracked. Tears appeared in the Penncrest senior's eyes and her smile widened as she took in the moment.

The 18-year-old displayed some emotion yesterday at the PIAA state track and field championships at Shippensburg University. And why not?

Moments earlier, Shump etched her name in the PIAA history books.

She became the first four-time Class AAA girls' shot-put winner with a heave of 47 feet, 103/4 inches. She also became the 12th girl in championship history to win an event four times.

"It's definitely a great feeling knowing that," Shump said. "It's definitely one of the highlights of my career."

And she wasn't alone in the highlight category.

Shump was one of three state champions from Southeastern Pennsylvania on the first day of the two-day meet.

Methacton's Ryann Krais won her third consecutive Class AAA girls' long-jump title. Krais also took first place in the AAA high jump. And Wissahickon's Ijelu Folarin captured the Class AAA boys' triple-jump title.

Shump's victory was never in doubt. She recorded the six best throws of yesterday's competition.

As a result, Cheltenham's Danya McCrewell finished a distant second at 43-1. Bayard Rustin's Alanna Owens was third in 42-23/4. Six of the top eight finishers came from District 1.

Shump is favored to add another gold medal in today's Class AAA girls' discus.

That event was far from her mind yesterday.

Shump began to weep at the thought of the milestone and the lasting friendships she made with the other District 1 shot-putters.

"This is my last time here," she said. "A lot of us have been throwing together for the last four years and it is our last big meet together."

While Shump was emotional, Krais was leaving her mark inside Seth Grove Stadium.

After winning the high jump at 5-5, the senior captured the long-jump title at 19-2.

The UCLA signee is also favored to win today's 100- and 300-meter hurdles finals.

The 100 hurdles semifinals are scheduled for 9:45 a.m. today. The top three finishers in each semifinal and the next two fastest times qualify for the noon final. The 300 hurdles final will start at 1:40 p.m.

Yesterday, Krais posted the fastest preliminary times in both events.

She won her 100 hurdles prelim race with a meet-record time of 13.66 seconds. The all-American bettered the 13.73 she set in last season's final.

Krais ran 42.04 in her 300 hurdles preliminary.

Folarin was equally impressive in the triple jump. The senior, who's heading to Pittsburgh, won with a personal-best 48-61/2.

"The triple jump is probably my best event," said Folarin, who was injured in the event at last year's Penn Relays.

As a result, the 17-year-old was held out of the triple jump the rest of his junior campaign.

"Since this is my last time, I wanted to win it," he said.

The Swenson girls' 4x100 relay team won its preliminary heat with a meet-record time of 47.73. The quartet of Jayee Wright, Anthonia "Mouse" Ballard, Venessa Mack, and Shanae Bailey bettered the 47.84 it recorded last season. The 4x100 final is scheduled for 1:20 p.m. today.

Unionville's Matilda Pancoast placed third (136-8) in yesterday's Class AAA girls' javelin.
