Pa. Girls: Roberts wins opener, 15-0

Jen Beaver broke the Owen J. Roberts school record for RBIs in a season by driving in four runs in the Wildcats' 15-0 shutout of George Washington in the opening round of the PIAA state Class AAAA softball tournament yesterday at Spring-Ford.

school record for RBIs in a season by driving in four runs in the Wildcats' 15-0 shutout of

George Washington

in the opening round of the PIAA state Class AAAA softball tournament yesterday at Spring-Ford.

Kelly Schymanski pitched three innings with nine strikeouts and reliever Taylor Schultz threw one in the four-inning perfect game that put Owen J. Roberts (23-1) in the quarterfinals on Thursday.

Beaver boosted her season RBI total to 30 by going 2 for 2 with four runs batted in. The junior erased the record of 26 set by Ashley Dixon in 2005.

Lexi Vaszily slugged a three-run homer against the Eagles (13-3), and Maria Distenziere added a triple.

Hatboro-Horsham

's Amanda Sadowl fashioned a 14-0 one-hit shutout of District 12 champion

Central

at Temple's Ambler Campus.

Rachel Gieringer contributed a two-run triple and a three-run homer, and Heather Hannum drove in four runs with a pair of triples.

Sadowl had five strikeouts in the five-inning contest and allowed only a third-inning single to Julie Touchstone.

State Class AAA.

A late rally by

St. Basil

fell short as the District 1 champion Panthers (21-3) bowed in the first round, 3-2, to District 3 runner-up

Donegal

at Spring-Ford.

Donegal (22-4) took a 3-0 lead through five innings with RBI singles by Laura Gebhart and Morgan Kibler, but St. Basil closed the gap with a pair of sixth-inning runs.

In the sixth, Amanda Bachmann scored on a hit by pitcher Erin Gallagher, and Mary Kate Gallagher knocked in courtesy runner Britnee Smith, but St. Basil went down in order in the seventh.

Nazareth Academy

(20-3), the Catholic Academies champ and District 1 runner-up, also ended its season with a first-round loss, 5-3, to District 3 champion

at Newville.

at Temple's Ambler Campus.

Pitchers Denise Haines and Jess Killoran combined for 17 strikeouts and no walks in seven innings, including 10 strikeouts by Killoran in four innings of relief. Gabby Conner's fourth-inning single was the lone hit for the Blue Devils (12-2).
