It's official. Former assistant coach Larry Yarbray is Chester High's new head boys' basketball coach.
Chester athletic director Jeffery Legette confirmed that Yarbray's hiring was approved last night at a meeting of the Chester-Upland school board.
He replaces Fred Pickett, who retired after leading the Clippers to their sixth PIAA state title in March.
Yarbray, a 1988 Chester graduate, served as a Clippers assistant coach for the last 10 seasons.
Yarbray follows a legend by taking over arguably the state's most storied program.
Pickett, the Southeastern Pennsylvania coach of the year for 2008, had a career record of 331-80 with three Class AAA state titles in 13 seasons.
Bernie Fitzgerald has been named the head coach at Lansdale Catholic. Fitzgerald, a long-time assistant coach at La Salle, takes over for Tom Kehoe, who was not rehired after 10 seasons.
