Sterling's Hiltner a winner

TOMS RIVER, N.J. - Sterling athletic director Bill Hiltner couldn't have scripted any better the final game he worked for his school.

TOMS RIVER, N.J. - Sterling athletic director Bill Hiltner couldn't have scripted any better the final game he worked for his school.

Hiltner, who in February announced his retirement as both athletic director and boys' basketball coach, will work until June 30.

Yesterday's 1-0 win by the softball team over Kittatinny in the state Group 2 softball championship at Toms River East was his final sporting event at the school.

"It's fun to go out this way," Hiltner said.

Hiltner's replacements in both jobs were named within the last week. Sterling assistant Rob Atene, a former star at Paul VI, will take over as basketball coach.

Matt Sheehan, who was the Sterling boys' soccer coach, will become the athletic director. Sheehan is being replaced as soccer coach by assistant coach Pete Narlys, a former Sterling player.

"I think all will do a great job," Hiltner said.
