Council Rock North's cross-country team ran into some tough competition in the boys' race at the Steel City Invitational but the Indians were more than up the task, grabbing both team and individual honors in Coatesville yesterday.

The Indians, with 58 team points, easily beat second-place Altoona (74) and third-place Unionville (109) in the 42d annual event.

They also boasted the top individual finish Dan Wallace covered the 3.1-mile course in 16 minutes, 25 seconds.

In the girls' competition, Boyertown's Elizabeth Simpson coasted to the individual championship with a 19:36.

Harrier Invitational.

At Pottstown, St. Joseph's Prep won the 23d annual event by taking second, fifth, seventh and eighth place in the boys' competition.

St. Joseph's Prep's 33 points was easily the best team score of the day. Oley Valley (64) was second.

The overall winner was Alex Talarico of Oley Valley, who covered the 3.-1 mile course in 17:19.

In the girls' competition, Exeter won both team and individual titles, while Owen J. Roberts was third.

Salesianum Invitational.

At Brandywine Creek State Park (Del.), North Penn's runners forged an impressive pack across the finish line, taking the two top spots and four of the top five, in capturing the team title with 21 points. Hatboro-Horsham (53) was second.

Christy Cohick took the top spot (19:54), while teammate Heather Selheimer (20:10) was second.

Girls' Tennis

Second-seeded Taylor Cohen of Lower Moreland stunned Harriton's Casey Robinson, the top seed, to take the District 1 Class AA singles title at the Arthur Ashe Tennis Center.

The Class AAA singles final will be played on Oct. 22, also at Arthur Ashe, between Tessa Lyons of Strath Haven and Devi Jadeja of Lower Merion.

Boys' Soccer

Sam Bergey scored with 45 seconds left in the game out after receiving a pass from Sean Bonner to help host North Penn stun Holy Ghost Prep, 1-0.

Souderton's Dan Meuleners scored 10 minutes into the second half to give his team a 1-1 tie at West Chester East.

D.J. DiPaula and Eric White each scored twice in Haverford High's 5-0 win at Glen Mills.

Evan Seltzer scored twice in Shipley's 4-1 win at Upper Merion.

Sam Heller's two assists propelled host Malvern Prep past Ridley, 3-0.

Greg Patrick scored and assisted as Octorara won at rival Oxford, 2-1.

Justin Filiaggi scored twice for West Chester Henderson in a 3-0 win at Great Valley.

Girls' Soccer

Chelsea Pierce's goal 15 minutes into the second half gave Springfield (Delaware County) a 1-0 nonleague win at Archbishop Carroll.

Rachel Sheehy's goal off a Karly O'Toole assist gave host Downingtown East a 1-0 win over Gwynedd-Mercy.

Conestoga got two goals from Murphee Greeley in a 3-0 win at Rustin.

Hannah Newman scored two goals and added an assist for Lower Merion in a 5-0 win at Shipley.

Field Hockey

Mia DiLella scored twice and Devin Bowes added a goal and two assists as Upper Merion topped visiting Harriton, 5-0, in a nonleague game.

Villa Maria used three second-half goals to beat visiting Ridley, 4-0. Meghan Kelett, Sera Berlacher, Marie Elena Bolles and Olivia Maggitti scored for the Hurricanes (12-1-1).
