Pa. Girls: Friends' Central takes tennis crown

Friends' Central added to a pair of impressive tennis winning streaks without even breaking a sweat yesterday. The Phoenix won their fifth straight Friends Schools League title with a 5-0 win over visiting Shipley. In doing so, they won their 30th-straight league match and won all five individual matches in straight sets.

Friends' Central added to a pair of impressive tennis winning streaks without even breaking a sweat yesterday.

The Phoenix won their fifth straight Friends Schools League title with a 5-0 win over visiting Shipley. In doing so, they won their 30th-straight league match and won all five individual matches in straight sets.

Emily Rosenbaum, playing first singles, defeated Robyn Rubenstein, 6-0, 6-0. Teammate Sarah Weingarten beat Kat Adkins, 6-2, 7-5, at second singles and Julia Ellis-Kahana defeated Kaitlin Gottleib, 6-2, 6-4 at third singles.

Field Hockey

Villa Maria showed no signs of rust after a six-day layoff in the PIAA District 1 Class AA tournament.

The host Hurricanes, seeded No. 1, got a first-half goal from Olivia Maggitti and second-half goals from Molly Murphy and Katie Briglia in a 3-0 second-round win over No. 8 Phoenixville.

The Hurricanes (18-1-1) advanced to a semifinal date against a familiar opponent, Merion Mercy, on Tuesday at a site and time to be determined.

Maggitti scored off a corner that she started, Murphy scored an unassisted goal, and Briglia scored off a nice pass from Marie Elena Bolles.

Merion Mercy earned its spot in the semifinals with a 1-0 win over visiting Upper Moreland as Kelly D'Addonna scored 17 minutes into the second half off a pass from Allison Moran.

Haley Keenan scored with 7 minutes, 49 seconds left in the game to give Gwynedd-Mercy a 2-1 win at Upper Perkiomen. Allison Pollock assisted on the goal. Cassidy Arner scored a first-half goal for Upper Perkiomen.

The Monarchs tied the game in the first half as Sarah Deitz scored off a pass from Shannon O'Brien.

Public.

Goals by Brittany Collier and Tylena Murray gave Washington a 2-1 win at Central in a preview of a league semifinal game on Monday. Kelly Tran scored for the Lancers off an assist from Talia Fish. The teams meet again at 5 p.m. Monday at Germantown.

Northeast won at Lincoln, 5-0, getting two goals from Stephanie Hughes and single goals from Jessica Shotwell, Alyssa Cornell and Isabella Campanara. Lincoln junior goalie Jennifer Zorilla had 14 saves.

Friends Schools.

Shipley remained unbeaten in the conference with a 3-0 win at Friends' Central as goalie Sara Blank had four saves and Julia Schwartz, Avery Safford and Brooke Truckey scored. The Gators (12-3, 7-0) led, 2-0.

Nonleague.

Trai Ann Peek scored on a breakaway in the first half to give Baldwin a 1-0 win at Germantown Friends.

Soccer

Grace Best's goal early in the first half turned out to be the game-winner for host Downingtown East in a 3-0 PIAA District 1 Class AAA second-round win over Methacton.

Best's goal was one of two in the first half for the Cougars (15-3-1). Biz Matta's goal made it 2-0 at halftime and Christine Stevenson's second-half goal closed out the scoring.

Bre Pletnick and Erin Galen scored for host Villa Joseph Marie in a 2-1 win over Lower Merion.

Kaylin Umstead's third-straight overtime game-winning goal lifted host Upper Perkiomen past West Chester East, 2-1. Deanna Mayza also scored for the Tribe.

Lizzy Carney had a goal and an assist for host Unionville in a 2-0 win over Owen J. Roberts.

Katherine Daniels and Taylor Bettinger scored for Gwynedd-Mercy in a 2-1 win at Boyertown.

Host Downingtown West got goals from Morgan Dankovich, Rae Bradlee and Steph Myers in a 3-0 win over Radnor.

Jordan Christopher scored 3 minutes, 21 seconds into overtime to give host Villa Maria a 2-1 win over Rustin. Christopher also assisted on a first-half goal for a 1-0 lead. Julie Tatios scored with 10:11 left in the game to tie it.

Conestoga beat visiting Spring-Ford, 3-0. Murphee Greeley scored a goal and added a pair of assists for the top-seeded Pioneers, who also got goals from Casey Steidle and Ashley Field.

Laura Lacy's five goals powered host Solebury School to a 7-0 win over Mercy Vocational.

Girard College scored three first-half goals and beat visiting Barrack Hebrew, 3-2. Amy Khalid, Zakia Way and Shaquira McCottrey scored.

Nonleague.

Goals by Kaitlyn McCaffery and Erica Bash enabled host Friends' Central to top Agnes Irwin, 2-1.

Emily Steiger's goal and assist proved to be the difference for host Phil-Mont Christian in a 3-1 win over Doane Academy.

Volleyball

Sarah Mandel's ace was the game-winner for Unionville in a 25-11, 25-12, 25-21 District 1 Class AAA playoff win over visiting Ridley. The Indians got 13 digs from Jess Pike, 12 kills from Breanna Rafetto and 27 assists from Cristine Schiavello.
