Seneca knocks Moorestown from girls' soccer tourney

The Seneca girls' soccer team has been living on the edge since the South Jersey Group 3 tournament opened last week.

The Seneca girls' soccer team has been living on the edge since the South Jersey Group 3 tournament opened last week.

The fifth-seeded Golden Eagles opened by squeezing past No. 12 seed Shawnee, 1-0, on a goal late in regulation, and then took down fourth-seeded Ocean City in penalty kicks.

Yesterday, Seneca had to put in some extra work again, rallying from a second-half deficit to oust top-seeded Moorestown, 2-1, on Jessica McQuillen's goal 1 minute into the second overtime.

Moorestown (16-4) scored first, when Alex Davis connected off a pass from Jessica Kerwin with 26 minutes, 48 seconds remaining in regulation. Katie O'Keefe, who had the game-winner against Shawnee, pulled the Golden Eagles even with 18:25 to go in the second half.

Seneca (17-4-1) advances to Friday's sectional final against another upstart team, 10th-seeded Lacey Township, which eliminated Deptford, 1-0. The sixth-seeded Spartans (14-6-1) surrendered the game's lone goal 1:26 into the match on a scramble in front of the net.

South Jersey Group 4.

Advia Campbell's header off a corner kick by Chelsea Cannon with 10:26 remaining in the game made top-seeded Lenape a 1-0 winner over No. 5 seed Cherokee.

The Indians (22-0), who beat Cherokee four times this season, will square off against sixth-seeded Oakcrest in Friday's final. Megan Sherman's overtime goal lifted the Falcons (13-5-1) over 10th-seeded Mainland, 2-1.

South Jersey Group 1.

Devan Doyle scored one goal and set up another as top-seeded Gateway started fast in cruising past No. 4 seed Riverside, 3-1.

Becca Marley and Laura Rathoff also scored for the Gators (17-3), who will host sixth-seeded Glassboro in the championship match Friday.

Liz Evans poked home Emily Sheridan's pass from 12 yards out just 10 minutes into the match, and the Bulldogs (11-9-2) relied on flawless goaltending by Jacy Heaton (seven saves) to upend No. 2 seed Schalick, 1-0.

South Jersey Group 2.

Becky Forcellini scored twice and Amy Koebert contributed a goal and two assists to power fourth-seeded Cinnaminson past No. 9 seed Audubon, 3-1.

The Pirates (17-3-1) will head to Haddonfield for Friday's title game. The third-seeded Bulldogs pulled out a 3-2 victory at No. 2 seed Haddon Township.

South Jersey Non-Public B.

Jackie Logue and Dana Stone each had a goal and two assists as top-seeded Bishop Eustace crushed No. 5 seed Sacred Heart, 5-0.

Sara Keane made three saves in posting the shutout for the Crusaders (12-2-4).

South Jersey Non-Public A.

Deandra Turchi and Chelsea Phillips gave eighth-seeded Paul VI (14-6) a 2-0 halftime lead, but No. 4 seed St. John Vianney netted three goals in the second half - including the game-winner with 1:08 to play - to pull out a 3-2 semifinal triumph.

Boys' Soccer

Brian Hill headed in a crossing pass from Trevor Sotell with 5:42 left in the first sudden-death overtime to give eighth-seeded Cinnaminson a 1-0 win at No. 5 seed Haddon Heights in a South Jersey Group 2 semifinal.

The Pirates (12-6-2) will travel to No. 2 seed Middle Township for tomorrow's group championship game.

South Jersey Non-Public B.

Despite 14 saves by MacKenzie Scott, Wildwood Catholic's improbable tournament run came to an end, as the seventh-seeded Crusaders fell, 3-0, in a semifinal at No. 6 seed St. Rose of Belmar.

St. Rose will meet top-seeded Sacred Heart in tomorrow's sectional final.
