Burrs run roughshod over Bucks

Putting on another show for its fans and the Dunmore faithful, which brought at least 10 charter buses to Northeast Philadelphia last night, explosive West Catholic racked up 517 yards of total offense and romped to a 49-21 victory in a PIAA Class AA state quarterfinal at Charlie Martin Memorial Stadium.

Curtis Drake, an electrifying quarterback and Penn State recruit, was again a catalyst. The 6-foot, 165-pound senior carried 11 times for 173 yards and a pair of scores. He also completed 4 of 7 passes for 91 yards and two TDs.

On the third play of West Catholic's first possession, Drake lofted a 53-yard scoring pass to senior wideout Eric Young. Five minutes later, Drake found a seam in Dunmore's interior and bolted 52 yards to the end zone.

"That was our main focus, to get a quick lead and take it home from there," Drake said.

In next weekend's state semifinal, the 13-1 Burrs, ranked No. 4 in Southeastern Pennsylvania by The Inquirer, will play the winner of today's noon quarterfinal between Mount Carmel and Lancaster Catholic at HersheyPark Stadium.

Against the Bucks, of District 2, Drake and company netted 234 yards on the ground in the first half and added 192 more in the second for a total of 426.

Rob Hollomon also starred for the Catholic League and District 12 champions. The senior carried 13 times for 83 yards and a TD. Also, he returned a first-quarter punt 75 yards to put Dunmore in a 21-0 hole.

Raymond Maples, the other part of West Catholic's triple-headed monster, added 159 rushing yards, on just eight carries, and had an 80-yard scoring burst in the third quarter. Dunmore (11-2) was held to 112 yards rushing.
