So you think high school seniors dominate the boys' basketball leagues in Southeastern Pennsylvania?
Then you have to check out these guys.
They're sprinkled around the Friends Schools, the Del-Val and the Philadelphia Public Leagues. One can be found at the Hill School.
Call them the Sensational Seven.
Academy of the New Church's Savon Goodman, Friends' Central's Amile Jefferson, the Hill School's Josh Heyliger, Westtown's Daniel Ochefu, Boys' Latin's Maurice Watson, and Chester's Kareem Robinson and Rahmir Jefferson are seven freshmen making a big impact at the varsity level.
Check out these guys before the season ends. You'll be impressed. You'll be able to boast about having seen them before they became household names.
Here's a look at the Sensational Seven (listed alphabetically).
Savon Goodman
School: Academy of the New Church
Position: Forward
Height: 6-foot-5
Skinny: Goodman is aggressive in the low post. Extremely flexible, he also has a good touch from the outside. Goodman is playing power forward, but he has a bright future as a swingman.
Josh Heyliger
School: The Hill School
Position: Point guard
Height: 6-1
Skinny: Blessed with a 28-inch vertical leap, Heyliger is explosive. He also has a solid mid-range jump shot. Still new to the point-guard position, the former center has a huge upside.
Amile Jefferson
School: Friends' Central
Position: Forward
Height: 6-6
Skinny: Jefferson has good low-post moves. He also has a high basketball IQ. He might not wow you with his speed or athleticism, but Jefferson plays bigger than his size.
Rahmir Jefferson
School: Chester
Position: Guard
Height: 6-4
Skinny: Rahlir Jefferson's younger brother is what one AAU coach calls "silky smooth." He can handle the ball, shoot, and he brings that "wow" factor. He has a solid all-around game.
Daniel Ochefu
School: Westtown School
Position: Center
Height: 6-9
Skinny: Ochefu, who is from Nigeria, is strong around the basket. He runs the floor well and is fundamentally sound. Forget potential. He's already good.
Kareem Robinson
School: Chester
Position: Guard
Height: 5-9
Skinny: Cat-quick, Robinson is one of the fastest guards in the area. He is an incredible defender who attacks the basket. Robinson is very aggressive.
Maurice Watson
School: Boys' Latin
Position: Point guard
Height: 5-7
Skinny: The son of a coach, Watson brings leadership and a high basketball IQ. He sees the court well and is a prolific scorer.
Two things about last week
1. How about Mr. Martinez and the Owls? Luis Martinez scored 26 points to lead the Edison boys' basketball team to a 72-68 upset of Bartram, ranked No. 10 in Southeastern Pennsylvania by The Inquirer.
2. Lucky 15 for Germantown: After opening the season with 14 consecutive losses, the Germantown girls' basketball team defeated George Washington, 36-33, on Friday.
Three things about this week
1. Closing in on a milestone: The Plymouth Whitemarsh boys' basketball team will go for the Colonials' 1,000th all-time win tomorrow night against Upper Dublin at the Colonial Elementary School gym. PW has a 999-396 record in 54 seasons.
2. One to keep an eye on: North Catholic faces La Salle in the Philadelphia Catholic League wrestling championships at the Explorers' gym Wednesday night. La Salle crushed North Catholic, 41-23, in the regular season.
3. Much-anticipated matchup: Christ the King (N.Y.) entertains Archbishop Carroll on Saturday in a matchup of nationally ranked girls' basketball programs. Carroll is 17th in the ESPN Rise Fab 50 national rankings; Christ the King, 50th.
Pompey's Super Seven
Here are the rankings for the top-seven winter teams in Southeastern Pennsylvania, regardless of the sport:
1. Cardinal O'Hara girls' basketball. The Lions are ranked fourth nationally by USA Today and fifth in the ESPN Rise Fab 50.
2. Archbishop Carroll girls' basketball. The Patriots are 17th in the ESPN Rise Fab 50 rankings.
3. Chester boys' basketball. Folks will find out just how good the "Baby" Clippers are this week. Chester has a much-anticipated rematch with Penn Wood and a game against Roman Catholic.
4. Boyertown wrestling. The Bears destroyed Pottstown, 71-10, on Saturday. Expect a similar outcome for them tonight against Owen J. Roberts.
5. Roman Catholic boys' basketball. The Cahillites will look to avenge last season's setback against Chester when they meet Friday night at Villanova.
6. La Salle boys' swimming. Feel sorry for Archbishop Ryan. The Raiders will be the Explorers' next overmatched opponent on Wednesday.
7. Germantown Academy girls' swimming. The Patriots have won six consecutive dual meets.
Under consideration: Germantown Academy girls' basketball, North Penn boys' swimming, Pennsbury boys' basketball, Swenson girls' track, Upper Dublin boys' track.
